staining/varnishing bamboo

wondering if someone could lend their expertise for the best way to sand/stain bamboo!!

I don't want to sound like and asshole...but use sand paper to sand.

and any type of stain to stain. (though staining bamboo doesn't always work)

Polyurethane will make the bamboo darken a little. Varnish will deffinetly make the bamboo turn an amber color but will crack overt time and is not flexible at all. Polyurethane withstands the bumps and lasts outdoors.
