Pages: 1 40 replies

M

Mr Smiley and Dangergirl will be in Portland this named weekend and are lookin' for action!!!
Not sure what our schedule will be yet, but the Jasmine Tree and ALibi are on the list. Oh, and a definate stop for food at Waddles-oh, that's right--it has been BULLDOZED by Krappy Kreme donuts!!! Damn Donut bastids!!!
The best donuts in Portland are....VOODOO DONUTS near downtown. I hear a maple-bacon bar (or twelve) calling my name! Zazz-i-licious!

UPDATE:FRIDAY February 11
8:30 pm - 10 dinner and karaoke at Alibi (encourage people to show up earlier to reserve seats)

10-11 JASMINE TREE drinks
11-12: mini strip bar crawl? (mary's?) if people are interested.

MIDNIGHT-Voodoo donuts

The rest of the weekend it looks like we will be spending with family.

Have a nice Tiki Day!

We'll be glad to have ya, Bruce! But personally, those bacon doughnuts creep me out. Now, a Cap'n Crunch doughnut, that's a doughnut! Voodoo, here we come! Might be a surprise guest or two in town when you come, too, if you play your cards right. And hey, might need to take a detour out to the fabulous Safari Club to see the artfully arranged taxidermy! Partay!

Be sure to eat some of those yummy Walla Walla sweet onion rings at Burgerville! DOUBLE-ZAZZ!

M

I'd love to hit the Safari-but may not have time. About how long would it take one way from Downtown?

Hey man, long time no post so I will answer this one. It is about 45 minutes ouside of P-town - one way. Long ass drive in the dark most of the way but worth a gander. Hope to see you. Oh and BTW - Sweet Onions are out of season right now - Poop!

Thanks for the heads up about Voodoo Doughnut. I did not know. But damn their greasy hides for not being open on Sundays! No doughnuts on Sunday? Are they some sort of heathens? I was so excited. So it's back to my usual Portland Sunday breakfast: Half a cold Royal Reuben from the Alibi.

They Say:

Voodoo Doughnut is located @ 22 SW third
503.241.4704
open 10pm-10am (8pm thur/fri/sat)
Closed saturday durring the day
Closed sundays

Rotten fuckers have attempted to steal the sign from Voodoo Donuts!!

And those maple bacon bars are SO DAMN GOOD your brain will melt.

If we can get my law school buddies involved, there may be a different kind of crawl involving Mary's, Magic Gardens, the Acropolis, etc... if my stamina is up for that sort of thing.

Drinks AND a show!

that's something you can't do in california anyway.

W

I don't wanna get this thread too far off topic so let me remind you all:

WHO:Mr Smiley and Dangergirl

WHAT: Will be

WHERE: In Portland

WHEN: February 11 & 12, 2005

WHY: Loookin' for action!!!

Now, back to Voodoo Doughnut:

Fellow travelers reported that the Big Doughnut was present and accounted for this past Saturday nite. (I was driving the getaway car, double parked.) We found the cake doughnuts dry, the raised ones fine and flavorable.

I remain haunted by the idea of a bacon maple bar. Some day I must make one mine.

I WAS haunted by the Bacon Maple bar until I had my first bite-now I am OBSESSED!!

As Mrs. Slocum would say, I am NOT unanimous in this obsession. I have enough high-fat high-carb obsessions already - I don't need one more!

I also don't like to "mix" foods. I'm very particular about that. I don't like oranges or cranberries on my salads, I don't dip breakfast sausages in maple syrup, and I probably wouldn't be keen on eating bacon and donut at the same time.

Voodoo Doughnut gives ME a maple bacon bar

if y'dig. dig.

D

i dearly want to go to Portland for a donut, oh and to meet and greet Mr Smiley and Dangergirl ~ but..bad weekend for us, as we'll be in San Diego.

i think a bacon maple bar is net zero carbs.. the bacon offsets the flour.. almost certainly. :)

I loved that article... "(the owner) Shannon dropped the microphone and bolted outside 9the bar across the street), where police were escorting a handcuffed suspect out of Voodoo. Shannon exploded with anger.

"We will press charges to the fullest extent," he yelled as an officer reached out, urging him to calm down. You don't, he added, mess "with Voodoo's giant doughnut."

Fryer Jay announced that Voodoo Doughnuts would reopen at midnight after the pepper gas cleared out. Shannon gave the customer who first jumped to the giant doughnut's rescue a coupon for a dozen free doughnuts. And, down at Central Precinct, police cited 25-year-old Nathan Neiderbach on charges of second-degree theft and malicious mischief.

"The police behaved themselves," Shannon says. "They wouldn't accept any free doughnuts."

Wouldn't they be open until 10am on Sunday from the night before?

is voodoo donuts where the 24 hour church of elvis used to be?

M

Funny thing is I hate it when I get maple syrup on my bacon at breakfast, but this thing transcends all of that. It is the Alpha and Omega of all snacks, for it has the power of the sweet/salty union: the undeniable glory of a cured pork product, and deep fried sweetness.

Boy howdy.

H

My friend Monica (you guys all met her at the NW Tiki Crawl last year) calls bacon the candy of the meats. Whenever I see bacon, I take a picture of it for her.

Have fun in Portland, guys!

S

I remember Monica! Bacon huh, mmmmmm

I'm gonna try to make it up there guys.
It's been tooo long.

D

i too, have the "food touching" aversion ~ an exception is bacon+maple syrup.. i'd have to try the baconut for a full conversion.

elicia

ps: if woofmutt really loved me, he would bring one back for me.

W

"is voodoo donuts where the 24 hour church of elvis used to be?" asked the dangergirl.

So woofmutt said "No, it's around the corner from that place."

Then dogbytes said: "if woofmutt really loved me, he would bring one back for me."

And woofmutt explained again that he was only driving the getaway car and only heard the tales of the bacon maple bar and the "cock and balls" (which did not impress the gyrl) form his pals who brought him a very dry "chocolate" (it was brown) doughnut with "chocolate" (also brown) frosting and Coco Puffs on top (which were brown and crunchy) but selected much fancier (and tastier) things for themselves.

Lesson learned: Don't send your drunk friends to get your doughnuts.

M

They also make one that's sprinkled with Tang!

It's the donut the astronauts drink!

The King is proud, yes he is.

M

Only two weeks to go!! ZAZZ!

M

I heard rumors that you Porltand folks were going to meets us around 8pm this Friday Feb 11 at the ALibi--is it still happening? Did someone reserve a table until about 10pm? See you there!! --Smiley

I can't wait! :) donuts!!!!!

There's a table reserved at Alibi for 8pm. It's under either Mark or Bruce, and it's supposed to be on the right hand side under the TV. I will be arriving late (a friend is premiering his first short at Spike and Mike's), so whoever is there first should grab the table and hold it fiercely. Wahoo!

M

only a few hours to go!

M

see you all tonight at the ALibi around 8pm! :)

M

It has never rained on me in Portland-I always seem to bring a break in the weather. This weekend showers are predicted, I wonder if my luck will hold off the rain!
Note; the no rain thing can NOT be said about going to Florida!!!! Hur-ri-cane!

Also, mrsmilery features 6 ft. plunger action!

This is true:

M

Sorry that the plane delay didn't allow us to make it to the Alibi--nice to see those who made IT TO THE jASMINE tREE. John- I turned around and you were gone!
My phone refused to work for the rest of the weekend and only has become fully function this morning-much to my annoyance.
Had a nice steak, check out a nice modern bar downtown called Harrison's. Great monkey paintings!!! Inhaled tons of second hand smoke at either Terry's or the Yukon (which one has the orange bar?). Hung out with some of Portland's upstanding citizens at The Lutz Tavern. Ate good BBQ and tasty fried chicken and shared a 40 of PBR (in an 'ice' bucket) at Delta's restaurant. Oh, we shopped a little, checked out the beautiful Chinese Gardens and ran out of time to go the the other 43 dive bars on my list courtesy of a great Portland Publication "Barfly". There is always a next time! :)
Ps-The Jasmine Tree is eternally on the endangered list because Portland State University wants that whole section of land to expand. But, currently, I was told the PSU is cash poor so it may not happen immediately--just in the future....

M

HOW could I forget Jens favorite place from when she used to live in Portland; Kays! Had a yummy Reuben sandwich! Possibly second best I have had (best is Wolfie Cohn's Rascal House in Miami).

You also missed mentioning the coolest bar in PDX: the Driftwood Lounge at the Mallory.

It was Terry's with the "special surprise" in the women's bathroom (it involves a VERY large Fabio) which has baked goods for sale (cupcakes).

By "a little shopping" he means he wasted many hours in one antique store while my sister, her husband and I had time to: antique shop, drink a bottle of wine, and translate "War and Peace" into Hawaiian.

We also went to Voodoo donuts (tweakers) and the portland art museum. And of course, the space room.

and many other fabulous vintage stores.

Bruce, Looks like your rainless streak in Portland is over even though it cleared up nicely for the rest of the weekend. Sorry about the quick exit. I had to drive out of town early on Saturday so I had to run (or should I say weave?)
