Las Vegas Volcano Mug

Wayne at the Hawaiian Inn is trying to locate the maker/distributor of a volcano mug used at the Hawaiian Marketplace and Kahunaville in Las Vegas. The only marking is a sticker on the bottom that says made in China. It is a very attractive design.

It is a very attractive design and, unfortunately, the best souvenir from the only tiki bar in town.

The Mirage should make it their official tiki mug.

Hey, so, I'm totally lost on this, but going to Vegas soon. Is is still open, can one be bought or stolen from the bar, and where is it?

I live in Vegas and we have one of those mugs. I never saw it at the the Marketplace. We picked ours up at Kahunaville. I think it was $30 or $40 dollars for the mug and a drink, but it can hold a lot of drink!

It can be purchased only from Kahunnaville, a bar in Treasure Island (T.I.), next to the Mirage, across from the Venetian, on the strip - Las Vegas Blvd.

WAIAIIWIWIWIAAAIAIIIT! KAHUNAVILLE??? I can't believe that's the same company. I live in Philly. THe Kahuna in Vegas is a branch of the first place that started in Wilmington, DE. I've been there, I go there, it's where the east coast VLV is. Well, not quite the full scale, but it's pretty major. It's the Hot Rod Hoedown in the fall. That's less than an hour away from me. They don't even use tiki mugs in the drinks. I'll head down this weekend to talk to the people in the biz office in DE. They should be able to tell me, hopefully, unless it's a carefully guarded secret. PS - The DE location isn't very tradional tiki. It's like a chuck-e-cheese, a sports bar, concert venue, jimmy buffet style outdoor bar, indoor concert venue, giant volcano, and pseudo american-polynesian restaurant in one. The decor is really good though, as far as waterfalls and volcano's go. There's also Joe's Crab Shack and a brewery that share the complex parking lot, though I don't know if its owned by the same company. I actually have a photograph that I did a series of 100 of that I still have some lying around, I'll see if I can find it. It sold pretty well at the gallery. Anyway, I'll see what info I can dig up, or a picture. ALOHA@!

I'll be in Vegas on the 25th of February. I'll be sure to go there with camera in hand.

I'll be buying one of those mugs if they are available for my Tiki bar!

We have a kuhunaville about 45 mins north of me at a mall in Holyoke, Mass. Been there once. Food was passing, decor ok (only tikis were outside by entrance) and the drinks were TERRIBLE. None of the bartenders knew what was in a Singapore Sling, let alone a Mai Tai...they did however, all "juggle" and throw the booze bottles around like little trained monkies. All sizzle and no steak, as my dad used to say. I dont recall ANY cool glassware on my first/last/only visit there, but may have to hit it again to get one of these mysterious volcano vessels. Its a race to be first to post a pic!!! :wink:

Howdy all. Is this the elusive mug? I went down to Kahunaville today. Forgot my digital camera though. Anyway, I found out who they get all their mugs from. Apparently some of them are exclusive to Kahunaville and can't be bought by the public, but the guys from Kahunaville said that if I need any of them, they'll order em for me. I hope this helps. I don't know how much they are, but, at least here's a picture!

Thank you for posting a picture. Yes, that is the mug except the one I saw does not have any writing on it. (It looks like your mug says Peppermill on it. If so, that is the name of another lounge in Vegas.....)
Did you get the name of the distributor? I don't think this is exclusive to Kahunaville because Wayne bought his at the Hawaiian Marketplace even though he saw the mug at Kahunaville, and perhaps it also is available at the Peppermill.

No, they have a distributor that deals in bulk. The names are custom, they're made without the names. Apparently they have several designs that are available to the public, and then there is the Kahunaville exclusive mugs. I've sent an e-mail to the contact Kahunaville gave me, so i hope to have a response.

That's the same mug I have, although mine is from the Vegas Kahunaville (courtesy of TikiBird - mahalo!). It may be just that the photo makes it look a little washed out, but the colors on mine are much more vivid. The browns & greens are very rich, and the lava is almost flourescent. And it says "Kahunaville" around the rim, in the lava.

The Peppermill is a resto/lounge just up the Strip from Kahunaville that has been discussed in many Vegas-based threads. Here's a good description (courtesy of Woofmutt):
"Somewhat across from the Stardust at 2958 Las Vegas Blvd S is the Peppermill restaurant. Its Fireside Lounge (mentioned here before) is very cool. Inside it's like late 1979 with low backed deep red velvet-esque booths, lots of brass trim, mirrored walls, fake trees, and dim light. The focal point of the lounge is a round aqua pool of bubbling water with flames. There's seating around the fire water and with the bubbling noise and sunken pit design it sort of feels like sitting in a dry hot tub. The waitresses all wear full length black gowns split up to the thigh and they sit down with you to take your order. The drinks are mostly tropical, large and well garnished, fairly good and seemingly completely lacking in alcohol (this was from a sample of 5 different drinks on two different nights)."

It's a great place and I've been there a number of times, but it somehow doesn't seem like the kind of place that would actually have one of these mugs.

Oh, and if I'm not mistaken, Kahunaville also has an over-sized palm tree shaped mug that was pretty cool, and their frosted pint tumblers are excellent!

Peppermill could be the casino located in Reno which I havn't been in years.....

that mug looks good, to break and give to polypop in a million pieces. LOL!

Great! Please let me know what you find out either by this thread or by e-mail. I have been pestering Wayne to sell a mug at the Hawiian Inn for years, and it would be wonderful if he would finally start offering one. There are so many great mugs that came from the Hawaiian Inn, it is a shame they don't sell them anymore. I think he likes this design because they have a volcano in their showroom.

Peppermill Reno (The Fish Bar) has those mugs- that's where I got mine. They're really pretty darn cool, actually.

FYI: Kahunaville in Ocean City Maryland is older by a few years than the one they put here in Wilmington.

I will have to get me one of those volcano mugs.

Yes, mine looks just like that picture, but is also much more vibrant in color.

I have also gone to the Peppermill on a few occasions and it is a very fun place to go. In the bar there is a fireplace surrounded by water and there are round couches all around. The walls are mirrored, it is very "florescent" and they have great drinks.

The Hawaiian Inn in Daytona Beach, Florida. Obviously, the wholesale price needs to be resonable enough to resell them with drinks to customers and make a profit.

I just got that same mug from the really cool new bar at the Peppermill Casino in Reno. I think it was $15.00 full of Bacardi and coke. It's a big one.

So, I didn't get to Kahunaville this weekend, and someone already had a pic of the mug posted ...so it's all good.

And when I saw said mug (monday) I decided we were off to Kahunaville for dinner (only about a 45min to 1 hour drive) as I needed to have one immediately!!

So we schlep up to Holyoke, Mass.... to the mall. Park on the lowest level and giddily rush in, past the deals at Filene's Basement....dragging the wahine past DSW and its siren song of designer shoes for low low prices, and reach the bottom of the escalator.

I step on and holler back to her to keep up...no time for shopping today!!!

The elderly couple in front of me prevent me from rushing up the steps so I decide to enjoy the ride. I crane my neck to the left and see the middle level of the mall comming into view....yes, yes...there it is!! I see the wild colors of the top of the Kahunaville sign.

As the escalator rises, I can now see the tops of the tiki idols who flank the entrance in all their goofy glory...and Im beginging to remember that I dont really like this place....poor food, worse drinks, noisy atmosphere, neon riddled, giant tvs everywhere....

ok wait...i like tv...but it totally ruins the tropical mood they almost set....almost.

Never-the-less...i MUST have the volcano mug... I MUST press-on!!!

And as the entrance comes into view I notice something large and white. "What is that??? Its covering the entrance?!?!" The entry way is maybe 25 feet wide and 15 feet tall....this is a BIG obsticle.

From here it kind of looks like drywall...

Did they seal the patrons inside in some kind of twisted homage to Edgar Allen Poe?? The tell-tale-tiki?? The cask of Amontillado??

There's a door on the side of this drywall creation. I try it. Its locked. I ask one of the nearby shoppers, "excuse me...do you know whats up with this place here?"

I get a blank stare, followed by the slightest of shugs, almost indescernable to the naked eye. He shuffles off to continue his window shopping at Fredrick's of Hollywood, and I'm left to ponder what has happened to Kahunaville....

The wahine finally catches up to me, muttering something under her breath about how its the fastest she's seen me move all winter.

"It cant be closed" I say.

"Ummm...it IS" she replies.

"No, I mean shutdown. I checked the website. Got the hours of operation before we left. What happened here?!?!"

And suddenly, I'm struck with a deep sadness and a heartfelt nostalgia for the place.

Its true, it wasnt near the top on my list of tiki spots...I'd only been a few times and was never really impressed....but it had its own eletricfied tiki spirit, and if its gone, I'm gonna miss it.

If anyone knows whats up with the Holyoke Mass Kahunaville, please let me know. Their web site still shows it operational. I've emailed them and not heard back yet.

I also called their phone number and got no answer.

Be a shame to lose another tiki spot in the northeast. We dont have any to spare.

I went to the Kahunaville in vegas a few years ago and I was also underwhelmed. You know you're in trouble when all the "specialty drinks" listed on the menu are Margaritas.

wait a minute - margarita-kahunaville - say it together fast and it comes out BUFFET! (and i don't mean the all-you-can-eat kind...)

I obviously don't agree that a tequila-based drink conveys MORE of a tropics lifestyle/experience than a rum-based drink, but I'm funny that way...

Now, the Peppermill ROCKS! according to the reno website, they have 14 themed bars - a little something for everyone - you can't go wrong with that;

I just check the Kahunaville in Wilmington for the volcano mugs. I was told "never had them and never will"."That is a tourist thing they do in Las Vegas location only."

So all you tiki tourists, don't make a pilgrimage to Wilmington DE in the future they have no volcano mugs to drink out of, or for sale.

Soooo.... did anyone find a contact that might be able to procure these mugs wholesale? If not, maybe the Farm could do a reasonable (and improved) version. SCD?

I picked up one of those volcano mugs in Vegas, a couple of months ago. I got mine at a little bar, in some sort of sidewalk shopping area, down towards the MGM. It just has a sticker that says "Las Vegas Lounge". I think it was $26, filled with nasty margarita.

My mom is on the quest for me this weekend in Vegas. I told her she can have whatever drink comes in it (from what has been posted, maybe I should tell her to just dump out the beverage.) I just want the damn mug. Hopefully, she'll come through.

OKAY FOLKS!

I'm back from Sin City! And YES! I have my Kahunaville Volcano Mug!

Here's the story: I get to Kahunaville, Awesome place by the way! I sit at the bar and ask about the mugs. According to the bartender, they are 10 bucks for the mug by itself. But I wanted a drink! I ordered a Bahama Mama.

Get a load of this, they mix up my drink in a shaker, then they take a piece of dry ice and throw it in the bottom of the mug! Can you guess what happened next? Yep, they poured my mixed drink into the bug and billows of "smoke" poured over the rim! I had crowds of people around my beautiful mug staring in awe at it's goodness!

The bad news? The mug with drink included was a whopping 35 BIG ONES! OUCH! But all in all worth it. I'll post pics soon.

On a side note, I found another spot that sells volcano mugs. Just north of the MGM Grand (next to the Denny's) on the strip is a Hawaian marketplace. There is a bar there called the Lava Lounge. Not really Tiki'd out but it's got atmosphere. They sell volcano mugs as well. In my opinion, not as high quality but they look nice. I didn't pick one up but probably should have!

That's were I got mine. And yes, they look nice, but are definitely "cheapies". Very thin.

My mother-in-law just brought me one of these from Kahunaville. MUCH bigger than I thought it would be, but yes, much thinner/lighter too. It might be a better centerpiece for a luau buffet, than a mug.
