Kaiwaza - Bong needs help (not that kind)

Pages: 1 4 replies

You're extremely knowledgable about my favorite kind of sonic vibrations. So, can you help a braddah out?

I have a version of a great tune "Papia Tahiti Nui" on a compilation cassette tape entitled "All the Best From Hawaii", put out by LDMI in Quebec.

I cannot find a version this tune on CD, any leads?

I know APE does a version, which I have, but I'm looking for the original which has a quicker tempo than APE's stellar version.

Also try Amazon. They have some used copies for sale starting around 3 bucks. Apparently that album is out of print.

Hey Tiki Bong,
I think the above mentioned CD is your best bet. It's actually a medley of two songs "Papio" and "Tahiti Nui" and although they are uncredited, the steel player is Bill Wolgramme. The singer on the few vocals on the CD is a New Zealand artist, Daphne Walker.
It doesn't seem that "Papio" has made it onto too many CDs and being a Tahitian song, I have it on a limited number of Hawaiian LPs, some vocal. That "All The Best From Hawaii" is the only CD I have "Papio" on. It's a very old traditional Tahitian song so as far as any "original" recording goes, I imagine that would be on a 78 rpm. Most recordings of it are vocals. If you're wanting a fast vocal, I'd suggest doing a search on eBay or elsewhere under Tahitian music CDs and you might find something.
As far as "Tahiti Nui", I think the Polynesians with Marie Terangi did the killer vesrion on their "Hawaii Calling" LP..different from any others I've heard, fast with interesting almost "oriental" guitar work. I think it's been reissued on some CDs that have been popping up on eBay and mentioned here earlier.
Hope that helps a little.
Cheers.
