Some of you are probably already familiar with Mark Mothersbaugh's seris of Beautiful Mutant photographs, done by using a mirror-like technique on vintage photographs to produce wonderful, and often quite eerie images. His 2005 tour includes a mutant image of a young hula girl. It can be seen at this link I challenge you to consume 4 or 5 mai-tais, and then look at the image. Vern |

Reminds me of the freak show in the circus and siamese twins gone bad. |

Hey Vern, the last time I visited Virginia was in August of 1980. The company I worked for then sent a group back to Norfolk to survey (shipcheck) an aging amphibious assault ship (USS Iwo Jima). They put us up in a place called the Tidewater Motor Lodge (or Inn or ?). About the 3rd day me and a buddy decided to go out bar hopping and sightseeing and didn't get back 'till about 1:30 in the morning. The next day we found out that DEVO had played in Norfolk that night and came back to the Tidewater and threw a party. I'm still kickin' myself for blowing my chance to meet Mark Mothersbaugh and the band, who were (at the time and still are) a fave of mine. It dosen't surprise me that Mothersbaugh loves this type of photography...so do I. "Nothing is ever the same as they said it was. It's what I've never seen before that I recognize" - Diane Arbus |

A few more of my favorite 'freak images' from the gallery .... http://www.mutatovisual.com/html/mutants/anitas_first_bf.html http://www.mutatovisual.com/images/2004_mutants/cyclo-augen-pet.jpg http://www.mutatovisual.com/html/mutants/father_and_son.html (perhaps this thread should probably be moved to bilge, since there are no more hula girl images) Vern |

Totally sick. Love it. I saw these in person last fall when I went up to Milwaukkee to see Lake Surfer's gallery show (err - they were at a different gallery than Lake Surfer's stuff!). I have a VERY limited edition print (mine is number 2 of 3!) of one from Mothersbaugh's poscards series that he showed in galleries a few years ago. Very reasonably priced, too. Duty Now, spuds! |
