Tiki Central / General Tiki

Could be a good Tiki resource - archive.org

Pages: 1 18 replies

I just stumbled upon a great website last night, that to the best of my knowledge hasn't been mentioned on Tiki Central before. It's a huge archive of film, music, text and software, free for all to use.
This could be a great opportunity for anyone with decent Tiki footage/clips to have a way of sharing them with the rest of TC via http://www.archive.org.

Here's the first thing I downloaded (Tiki Bar TV):
http://www.archive.org/movies/details-db.php?collection=opensource_movies&collectionid=TikiBarTV01mov
Many TC'ers will cringe at the mention of Buffett, the use of tequila-based drink as their recipe, etc etc, but it gives a good idea of what's acceptable.

Check out what Tiki Central looked like back in 2002:

Download a full movie with a Tiki bar scene:
http://www.archive.org/movies/details-db.php?collection=feature_films&collectionid=big_bluff

Watch some fine black and white hula action:
http://www.archive.org/movies/details-db.php?collection=prelinger&collectionid=soundie_5

No doubt there's all kinds of stuff there waiting to be discovered but it would be even better if we contributed.

Great site TW. This kind of content reminds me of what the world wide web offered at its start until it was overun by commercial interests.

There are some amazing films are under the category "Futurism":

This archive has a subset within that has been discussed: the Prelinger Archives. Strongly recommend you take a look at that, truly fascinating.

thejab is right about the "futurism" stuff -- tons of fascinating clips. Also try "Atomic." (My fave is "A is for Atom").

What is the fate of this clip you posted? This Tiki Bar Lounge show? Are there any more?

Plus you can download more Grateful Dead shows from there than one could ever imagine. I realize that may not be a good thing for many here on TC, but I just couldn't help myself from mentioning it, and I'll bet there's one person reading this who might care just a little teeny bit.

Yeah, there's some amazing stuff there - I've downloaded a bunch. Here's a nice little one that reminds me of Tiki Central, but with ciggies instead of Tiki mugs.

Not sure if that Tiki show will be made again. It appeared to be a 'podcast' and hopefully someone with taste will have inserted the ipod deep up 'Dr Tiki'. I'm being cruel, but they made a fatal error when they chose Jimmy Buffett's margarita recipe as their first featured item.....

PS - And yes, many many many Grateful Dead shows. You'd never have to listen to anything ever again. Fair play to them for allowing their shows to be taped and distributed, though. Too many bands are uptight about that sort of thing, which can only really be of interest to a true fan anyway.

It turns out that there are a few more:

The archive.com site is great. I got into downloading weird old clips a few years ago. Like Satan's Sin, A for Atom is one of my favorites.
There is also one about a teenage girl going through puberty, and she is talking about how she can't go swimming because she has "the curse"! It is worth watching just the hear the mother say "Menstration". Classic stuff...

Searching the other day I found a pre-Pearl Harbor clip about how great the Navy was and how the sailors are enjoying shore leave in Hawaii. Lots of footage of luaus, surfing, hawaii-stuff...

Here is a website that gives more information about the 'Tiki Bar TV' podcast site. I haven't tried to download any of the segments yet.

Hey there Trader Woody - you're right. We're sorry. We haven't been using a whole lot of rum in our drinks. Not very Tiki at all, I agree. See, when we shoot the show... well, we've usually drunk all the rum by that point. So we kind of make up a drink with whatever ingredients we have left!

That being said, we wanted to make sure you were happy with our latest drink selection, so we hope you will approve of our latest receipe. In fact, I'm SURE you'll approve of it, and let me tell you, it was very tasty creation indeed.

Cheers dude!

I love it! Woody is now somewhat immortal. If I didn't have to get up so early tomorrow I'd have a Trader Woody (have a Woody...hehe) right now.

Hey Selector, I too have found this to be the best Greatful Dead source ever. Sooooooo many shows to choose from.

Bloody hell! I was expecting a right kicking there, but that was great!!! Utterly mindboggling that a comment posted from England on a messageboard can get picked up, resulting in a tv show being made & broadcast from the US just a week or two later.

The Tikibartv gang are true gents (and one fine lady) and I salute you.

Cheers!

Is there a way to watch this on a PC?

I just downloaded it (right click....save target as), then double clicked on the downloaded movie file (.mov).

You can also view it here:

Does that mean I'm not going to get that iPod anymore? I guess I can live with that.

No worries, Woody.

Doctor Tiki, Johnny Johnny............

where's Lala????

I watched every one of your episodes last night. I laughed, I cried, I had the strong urge to drink heavily! And Lala is just so freakin' H-O-T!

Oh, and you gotta get that girl back on, the one who was drunk and laughed through the entire episode - the camera loves her!

I plan on running your episodes back-to-back on a monitor near my tiki bar. Just one continuous loop of tiki madness.....

O

Trader Woody! Johnny Johnny made a drink in your honor at the S.S. Tiki Bar on Saturday. Two types of rum. Where the hell were you?
