Announcing The Second Annual Tiki Oasis Drink Taste-Off! Arrr!

Pages: 1 20 replies

M

Arrrrrr!

Many a pirate has sailed the seven seas with his trusty cutlass, parrot, and peg leg. But of all his many accessories, none was as important as his grog! For what would a pirate be without a flagon of grog in one hand and a…well nothing in the other hand since it was a probably a hook.

At any rate…Grog has a long history among the pirates and sailors of the world since it was first created by Admiral Vernon in 1740. Back then, it was simply rum & water, and maybe a little lime and sugar.

Of course, Grogs also have a long history among the great tropical drinks of the world, and it is in the spirit of Tiki, Pirates, Rum, and Oasis that we proudly announce:

The Second Annual Tiki Oasis Drink Taste-Off: The Grog!

This year, we invite mixologists to step up the challenge and pour their own lethal Grog Recipe. It can be an original recipe (in the “grog” style, more or less) or from a published source (Grog Log, Intoxica, bartending guides, internet sites, etc.- see end of message for more ideas). The instructions and rules are the same as last year.

-All those wishing to compete as mixologists MUST announce on this thread by Wednesday May 4th.. You must also tell us the name of the drink you are submitting.

-Mixologists should be prepared to make enough drinks for about 40 small tastings. This is typically 8-10 drinks. You must supply all of the ingredients. Please have them premixed. A tip jar will be provided to offset the costs, as it was last year. We STRONGLY encourage hearty tipping, or ye will walk the plank!

-Those wishing to taste/judge will be given slips of paper to rate each drink from 1-5, with the highest average drink score taking home the trophy!

-We will once again be hosted by the gracious and generous Nelva, aka CheekyGirl, in her room. It will likely be 139 or 141. She will provide tasting cups, pencils, and ballots.

-Winner gets the privilege of spending one year with the incredible Taste Off trophy to display proudly in their home. You may brag about it publicly.

-Dr. Z and I, as co-winners of last year’s contest, now assume the title of “Mixologist Emeritus” and will step aside this year to allow some new blood to compete. We will be there to referee.

-This is a TC event, by TC, for TC. Please don’t tell everyone on earth that there are free drinks in CheekyGirl’s room. Please show some discretion. We just don’t need this getting out of hand.

The magic takes place: Friday Night at 11:30 PM

So let’s get some contestants!!!!!!

Please as usual, post all questions, comments, and concerns here.

This is your new RAP music debut in the Reef, right? Iuka Groggy Dogg and MC Mauna Loa???

Blimey! This was great fun last year. Come on and step up to the plank? Anyone? Anyone?

If there’s any confusion as to what to do, or how it works, etc. don’t hesitate to post your questions.

I think we’ve worked out all the kinks, so this year’s contest should go very smoothly!

And contestants will also get an official 2005 Tiki Oasis Grog Mixologist Badge as a souvenir to cherish and enjoy!

I humbly accept the job of undersized bouncer and overzealous crowd controller.

Monkeyman, thar' ye go! Tis the Spirit!

Come on ye able-bodied lasses and old salts, we don't want this contest to end up in Davey Jones' locker!

i'll throw my name into the hat with the pirate grog aka blackbeards ghost.
as recreated in the grog log on page 21:

1oz oj
1/2 oz falernum
2oz sweet & sour
1/2oz apricot brandy
2 dashes angostura bitters
1 1/2 oz light puerto rican rum
1/2 oz demerara rum

Aye Matey!

Sail Ho! Me thinks we be havin one more Sailor lurkin in the bow of this ship. So, looks like thar be 3 grogs, for the tastn, an original concoction me is told!

If thar be one more brave soul, that is willing, we can set sail and make this tasting a success!

Monkeyman - I promise to exercise more self control at this year's taste-off so you won't have to throw an LAPD chokehold on me again.

"Don't choke 'em, smoke 'em" - Daryle F. Gates - chief of police, LAPD (ret)

Avast - mateys! I was planin' to maybe judge but the drunkin hat has just thrown in his lot to make the masterful "Blackbeard's Ghost" - Now I be partial to any pirate-worthy concoction such as that one, errrr.... I may be a pirate but a fair pirate and therefore recuse meself from judgin' this 'ere contest...

Hanalei Pirate, how about entering your own grog and shrinking a few skulls? Since you will be staying for one night only, the grog tasting may be just the ticket to mix, share, and partake in a Oasis event!

Are ye up to the challenge!

T

Ok, since all indications I see point to this being the last Oasis at the Tropics, I'd be honored to enter another grog into the contest.

It's gonna be a strange one though- and it'll be a surprise :)

Ahoy, me seez a Oasis on the horizon!

Okay, me mateys: The following have confirmed:

  1. Cheeky Girl (Trader Vic's Grog)
  2. Drunken Hat (Black Beard's Ghost)
  3. Tiki Hula (Original Recipe)

The following are "tentatively" scheduled to enter the contest (I've heard through the grapevine or through one source or another, so, I apologize in advance, if I'm incorrect or if you did not have any intention of entering!) However, for planning purposes, if you are definitely entering a grog, please post your "AYE" or "NAY", not later than Wed. 12:00 noon. I've planned for 6 contestants, so I need to know ASAP as I'll have to buy more supplies and reprint ballots.

  1. PhiPhiRho ?? (original recipe)
  2. Wersmo Derinc ?? (original recipe)

And just to recap, Martiki has suggested 40 taste samples. The cups I purchased are 3 oz., so samples of about 2-1/2 oz. should suffice. My drink is approx. 5 oz. (which is kind of small for a tropic drink), so I have to make more than the 8-12 drink ratio, 100 oz., is what I was planning on making, so plan your drink quantity accordingly.

It's better if you pre-mix your entry and keep it in a container or containers. And keep in mind that you will have to pour from that container (a pitcher works nicely) If you need to store it, I will have an ice chest available in my room. If you need to mix a bit prior to the tasting, let me know, so I can make my room available.

According to the Tropics, it looks like I'm in ROOM 140. Everything should be set up and ready to go, but of course, I'll need a little help with set-up, and Monkeyman has volunteered for a little crowd control, which we will need.

Judging from last year, the natives get restless, so we should be ready to pour samples at 11:30 p.m.

With some tried and true recipes and some original recipes, this grog contest should be quite interesting!
:D :D :D :D :D :D

P

Not tentative. I'm in. Yes, this is original. It has no name. It's a simple, spiced Navy Grog that I have been working on, an attempt to recreate the Trader Vic's Navy Grog without the Vic's Mix or the way-too-hard-to-get Pimento liqueur. I once made it with molasses, but I have moved on from that. For the time being, call it "Groggy Grog."

Right on Mate!

Grog Tasting Update!

We've got 4 entries confirmed. Just in case theres any late ponies added to this race, I've planned for 5-6 contestants, so no worries, for those of you that are still perfecting your grogs, just let me know sometime Friday afternoon at the Oasis!

Cheers!

T

My grog will be an interesting version of the Navy Grog recipe- not so wild afterall.

My hat goes off to all the participating Mixologists, all entries were most excellent!

An interesting array or exotic ingredients from Hibiscus to cinnamon syrup, made for a colorful and delectable variety or flavors and accents from bitter, spicy, to tart to sweet. It was an intoxicating in more ways than one.

Martiki and Z, thank you for making this happen and allowing this overly obsessive organizational freak be a part of this great event for one more year! It was so much fun, you know it's a success when the pavement outside of your room is so sticky your flip flops stick for the next 2 days.

Congratulations Drunken Hat! ((( bowing down ))) Damn, I really thought I had a ringer with the Trader Vic's grog. I think it was the damn 1/2 mixture of real lemons and lemon concentrate that did my grog in. Foiled again!

Monkeyman, I thought you were a fabulous bouncer, the Magic 8 Ball wouldn't have been able to do a better job.

Everyone: Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

thanks cheekygirl! to be honest i thought my grog would get flogged by the tv grog too. it was a pleasure to meet you and thank you for all the hard work that you put into the competition. i will post some pics as soon as the trophy has been "modified".
