NYC ?? Who are the Tiki Boys?

Aloha. I was the opening of Otto's and had a great time, but while I was there I saw a group of guys wearing matching T-shirts that said "Tiki Boys". Does anybody know what this is all about? Are they a band? A club? A motorcycle club? Just wondering.

MC

I ran into one of the Tiki Boys at the SlipperRoom once. He described it as a "fraternity." Google calls it a " social club." Looks like they're throwing a party at Otto's on the 14th. They have a website: http://www.tikiboys.com/ Links from vespas to hardcore to rockabilly to cocktails.

Thanks manic cat. On a side note, it was great to see so many people turn out for the opening of Otto's. It has a nice feel to it, like the LES used to be - fun and gritty.

MC

Hey, the LES is still fun and gritty. Just don't go out on a weekend night or to any of the new swank restaurants. I don't know. I love living in the LES. My faves:
Barrumundi, slipper room, arlene's grocery, Gus's pickles, Kossar's bagels, Russ + Daughteres, Katz's, tenement buildinsgs, old synagouges/orthodox jewish community, immigrant history, puerto rican neighbors, orchard street, hip-hop shops open until 4am, Chinatown creeping in, Bluestockings feminist bookstore, win 49. I love it.

M

Oh, I mis-spoke. I LOVE the LES, I just miss a beautiful little coffee shop that used to be on Avenue A (where I fell in REAL love - for a while anyway) before the cafe (and the woman) departed to make way for gentrification. I miss the Mercury when you could just walk in and have a drink maybe poke your head through the curtains to see the band warming up - lately the club is fronted by a line waiting to enter through velvet ropes. Thank God for Holiday's. It might be a little far North to really be the LES, but its still got the best juke box in town and has the beautiful aire of rock and roll. If there were one thing I could take to a desert island? It would still be The Lower East Side - I don't know how I would get it to a desert island, but the LES is an oasis on this island.
P.S. had a great time new year's a Waikiki Wally's - it may not be so hip, but it was fun!

MC

Oh, my heart lives at Holiday also. It's owned by an old Ukrainian (like many of the finer dives of the East Village) and being of Ukrainian descent myself, there's a nice homey feeling for me there.
Oh-tell about WW on New Year's. I was there New Year's Day and "partied like a rock star", I'm embarressed to say. Cheng hooked me and my friends up with SO much free alcohol, and then took my boyfriend and me in the kitchen for free lobster. we had a great time at Kareoke singing Eminem, but soon my cocunut bra was lifted for some "Girls Gone Wild" phots behind the bar. I passed out in the waterfall admidst buckets of soap bubbles. It was the best New Year's Day ever.
PS of course Wally's is hip! Just to show you--one of the New Kids on the Block was drinking at the bar. It's where all the Party People go for a good time. I haven't been disappointed by the dozen times I've been there.

WW was a lot of fun on New Year's Eve (but maybe not as much fun as the next day) - Cheng was well into the thick of things as usual, and by 11 PM the whole place was dancing and grooving to the band. By the time my girlfriend and I left, Cheng was wearing his skipper's hat, ever present grass skirt and a coconut bra - hopefully not the same one from your GGW photos - and I'm pretty sure he was about to start dancing on the tables - of course it may just have been table dancing, but I'm sure that happened also. It was a great time, but now tell me, who are you that you get the "special WW service" of a personal escort through the kitchen etc?

MC

Ben and I must have really impressed Cheng with our rendition of "Without Me," I suppose. Ben's an awesome rapper. I think on slower nights, Cheng is a really friendly and generous guy. We were just in the right place at the right time. We are there alot and always bring in big groups offriends, but I think Cheng is a party-animal and just wants to share da love. And maybe the fact that we both do our laundry at the same laudromat?
ps who was the band? "Tiny Bubbles" Hawaiian band who plays Mondays?

It was the Tiny Bubbles band! and they were really good. I had not met Cheng before the other night, (but I have heard a lot about him - and he certainly didn't disappoint) - He was very friendly to both me and Kathy - we've got some great pictures with him. By the way, my name's John and my girlfriend (Kathy) and I work in Mid-town and live in Queens.

I sent you a private message but no response...
