what kind of advice are you looking for...
i have not made one..but I play african
drums (djembe, ashiko) that are made from
carved out logs... and other drums that are
barrel-type staved construction. are you
seeking input on carving or attaching the
drum heads?

B

Hey Cookz, I have made a few Polynesian drums for some ex-bandmembers of the MaiKai. Here is the prettiest one made from Mahogany forCharles Mohi.

You do most of it with the chainsaw. The inside being hollowed out so you need long gouges and the chainsaw.

C

Ben you are frickin' crazy with your
stuff...that drum is incredible! I don't
see any animal skin...is it a "slit drum"
or "Log drum?"....have you carved anything
else that we're not aware of....

F

i am looking to make on with skins atached. And Ben is alway astounding. Thanks for the quik info.

Ben,
I can almost hear the natives (and I'm deaf in one ear)calling their Ohana to dinner with that beauty. You are always one step ahead of us in your special art.
Look forward to meeting you at Hukilau.
Thanks!

WHAT!!!?

(love you Bunga!)

B

I think I heard that! Thanks.
Yes that was a slit drum, but a skinned drum should not be as difficult. I'll try to see you tomorrow nite.

This was given to me by a lady in my mothers retirement complex. She said it came from somewhere in the Pacific, while her husband was stationed there. Its a hollowed log with an animal skin top (still has fur on it). Looks easy enough to create, all you need is a critter to skin.

F

thanks guys. I really appreciate the replys...

i am really seeking advice on the head.. both skin and stretching... i have read web sites bt i want real hands on experience

Hope to see ya Ben

Hey FlaCookz, don't forget to add Mr Gecko's drum based tikis into the idea pile.

I guess the openings at the bottom are for letting he sound out. If anyone would, Gecko noze

lookos like a good start....you probably
know this...but to make the drum "playable"
you will need to shave the head area down
to a thickness of around an inch...an
un-even rim will make it difficult to
develop consistent sounds....I have
thought about carving into a couple of
my african drums but I don't have the
courage yet.
good luck.

THANKS FOR THE TIP THATS WHAT I WAS LOOKING 4
