I highly recommend his new book, "The R. Crumb Handbook" - among other things, he admits that the early 1950s Disneyland dark rides inspired him pre-LSD days.... http://www.christophermerritt.com/78/HulaMelody.mp3 Enjoy! |

Tang is right, the book is really good. Plus, the CD is interesting and contain some good stuff he did with different bands. |

I agree - this book is great. I read the entire contents in one evening a few weeks ago, which is easy since much of it is made up of comics from his past. The book has an autobiographical narration to it, which is a bit more uplifting than the Crumb documentary from a few years ago. One of the songs on the CD is a Hula medley, which is a lot of fun. One's of Crumb's associates in the Cheap Suits is Robert Armstrong, whose cartoons are (while few in number) really very good. They were all very fond of that steel hawaiian music from the turn of the Century to WWI Ecclectic folks. |

Looking at Robert Armstrong's website, I came across this picture, titled 'Tiki Vindication' I love the detail of the scampering guy and the broken ukulele Vern |

He coined the phrase "Couch Potato" as he had a cartoon named that, and also was the brains behind the unforgettable comic "Mickey Rat". (what higher praise could anyone ask?) |
