free SHAG art from Fender

I originally posted this as follow-up on the Shag guitars at the NAMM show. Just wanted to make everyone aware in case they, like my girlfriend, start to nod off at the word "guitar". :)

The new issue of Fender's Frontline publication (their catalog) includes an 11x17 pull-out poster. One side has a closeup of theShag-painted custom tiki guitar and you can clearly see the fantastic art on the body, the koa pickguard and the malacite Ku fretboard makers. Also, Shag is pictured with Fender Custom Shop Master Builder John English, a very well-respected hombre in the guitar-building biz. Very, very cool stuff. I hope they include the Shag guitars in next years Custom Shop Calander, which my girlfriend jokingly refers to as "guitar porn." I think she's joking ...

The best part is the other side of the poster - a reproduction of what I'm assuming is a previously-unpublished Shag original entitled "Kapunu Goes Electric" picturing some of Shag's famed dancing tiki heads havign a bongos-and-Telecaster hootenanny in the jungle. And the Tele-weilding tiki is plugged into a period-correct tweed-covered Fender amp.

And it's free! Just go to your local music equipment retailer that carries the Fender line and grab a copy or two.

As a guitar player for going on twenty years (and playing a Telecaster for most of them) who's become quite smitten with the whole tiki vibe in recent years, it's such a treat to have two of my favorite things meeting thusly. Kinda like you-got-you-chocolate-in-my-peanut-butter.

How was the gig with Dick Dale a while back? Are you guys still getting shows?
I caught the Infrared and The Insect Surfers this weekend in Monterey. It was pretty fun. Both bands were on fire! I got some good video footage with pretty decent sound for a buit in camcorder mic.

The Dick Dale show went swimmingly well (pun quite intentional). About 450 attendees in a theater setting who were very nice to us and a number of them have come to our club shows since. Our bass player has a 14-year-old son who's surf guitar-mad and Dick, a father himself, talked to him one-on-one for about 15 minutes, giving him all kinds of fatherly advice and pointers. Very, very cool!

We've got some club dates up coming and I'm putting together a big post-Hukilau show in Tampa on Sunday, June 29th - details to come!

We hope to do a performing pilgrimage to the land of the surf, SoCal, before long.

Sounds killer Tweedy! Thanx for the tip on the Shag poster in the catalog. I just picked it up today. Of course I ripped the poster getting it out of the magazine. It has been that kinda day.

The Guitar Center on Halsted has a ton of these, for you Chicagoans.
They're in a pile on the floor under a display, so you'll have to poke around a bit in the guitar section. This is indeed guitar porn - there are hundreds of guitars to drool over, for those of you who aree into suck things. The Shag poster is perforated, so you can tear it out easily - the olny problem is what to do with the rest of the magazine after you de-Shagifiy it. At like 300 pages, it's a shame to toss it just because the centerfold is missing.
