I'm in the process of building a chickee hut and need a carving done on the top of the cypress center pole that will be extending thru the top. I got some good ideas looking at this site and noticed that there were several of you in the area. I'm not a carver myself and wouldn't want to make a first attempt on this one. Any interest or suggestions of someone in the area that might be able to help me out?

Look up GMAN. He's in your area and quite accomplished as a carver. Good luck.

P.S. What is a Chickie hut?

Chickee Hut is the traditional dwelling of the Seminole and Mikosukee Indians. It amazingly looks Just like out "Tiki" Huts It is made with Cypress poles for All the structure and Sabal palm fronds for the thatched roof.
i used to carve under one and they are amazingly cool.

Traveler or anyone else- Where do you get cypress poles?

I am starting an outdoor bar/hut project of my own and have had no luck thus far - hoping to use a combination of 4.5" and 2" diameter (cypress or cedar) poles for the uprights and framing the entire roof. I'm in the Ft Myers area...

Noob - Traveler likely won't be back on TC. I know there are a few local mills that sell cypress pole, but I don't know where they are. Try an internet search for cypress lumber or pole. I hope to hear from him soon, so if he calls, I'll try to get some info for you.

McTiki - I spent it :P !!!

Thanks GMAN,
Yea I reckoned he might not be back (just had a few posts and then gone..). I have found some places selling cypress via the web, http://www.acethatch.com, above Orlando and http://www.palmhuts.com on the space coast... Both have pretty high shipping costs, so I'm still looking for something closer to home. I've also looked at http://www.safarithatch.com in Ftlauderdale, but they carry just cedar & eucalyptus... I may cave soon and order from acethatch cuz I really want to get the bar moving along - it's just sitting waiting for poles to be inserted into framing before I can continue. thx
