I picked this up at a thrift store a couple of days ago. I looks likes some kind of Polynesian warclub, but I am not certain. I tried to research this piece, but the photos of bonafide clubls that I've seen seem to have more carving detail than this item. The eyes are mother-of-pearl (on both sides of the club); the wood is dense and heavy, like monkeypod; and the item is clearly handcarved. There are two holes... one at the base of the handle and the other just below and behind the figure's neck. Do any warclub experts have any insight into this item? Is it Polynesian, Africian, or Mesoamerican? |

Definately,it looks Pacific Islander, but it's a bit short. & I've seen alot of the S American clubs like this but they were more ornate. Maybe they had to many drinks & couldn't finish it? |

Looks like a souvenir Maori club. I have one that's similar, but mine's an obvious souvenir because the carving is very crudely done. [ Edited by: Slacks Ferret 2006-06-05 16:48 ] |
