Can you help identify type of wood ?

Pages: 1 9 replies

Hi Everyone,

I'm hoping I'm posting in the right folder. I couldn't find any place else to go to here. Could you help me identify what kind of wood this might be? It's also inlaid with something I don't know what that is either! I picked it up at an estate sale about 5 years ago. Not sure if that helps but all together it weighs about 4 pounds. mahalo - CSS

Looks like Acacia wood, also known as Monkeypod.

I'm guessing Filipino Mahogany.

Yup, looks like monkeypod to me. I'm no expert, but I see a plethora of it everyday at the thrift store.

monkeypod

Here I thought maybe I had something great :(
Thanks all for your replies!!

Actually your find is a good one because Monkeypod bowls and utensils dont usually have inlay in them.

It is Most likley Monkey pod, but it Also looks like Phillipine Mahogany. There are several other species that look like this too, BUT Most salad bowls were carved from Monkeypod I Think.

Thank you! I book marked the sites. The first link didn't work but the rest had a ton of info. This does look more like monkeypod versus filipino mahogany.. anyways for me it doesn't matter. I got it super cheap and I need spending money for next month so it's going to look better in someones house more than stashed in a box over here!
