Thrifting for Tunes - Sundays on LuxuriaMusic.com

Pages: 1 2 3 128 replies

: : Thrifting for Tunes - the short radio bit I've been putting together for the Lounge King Show here in Montreal over the past few months - made its move over to internet radio station LuxuriaMusic.com on Tuesday, May 2. : :

: : The show airs every Tuesday at 10 a.m. Pacific/1 p.m. Eastern, repeating at 6 p.m. Pacific/9 p.m. Eastern : :

: : Thrifting for Tunes is recorded behind the bar here at my Mauna Loa Lounge. The show features an eclectic selection of music from here, there and everywhere... From thrift shops, to record stores, to church bazaars, to the World Wide Web - if it's out there, it'll make its way into the lounge and out to you on Thrifting for Tunes. : :

: : As you probably know, LuxuriaMusic features a mix of outre lounge and Latin jazz, breezy swinging instrumentals and vocals, groovy 60's go-go,psychedelia, quirky oddities, retro pop and surf music. And I'll also try to branch out beyond all that on occasion. : :

: : The first show is just a little intro to the Thrifting for Tunes concept and a sampling of various types of music that may or may not pop up again on the show in the future. Other episodes to come will be more thematic in nature. : :

: : Whenever possible - which means almost always - each segment will end with an exotica track or something from the Polynesian Pop repertoire. : :

: : Why am I doing this? Well, because they asked. Plus, I'm always listening to music anyway, so I figured, why not share it...? : :

: : Complete info can be found at LuxuriaMusic.com. Ill be posting playlists on the TUNES! page at maitaionline.com.

So there you have it...

Thanks, John in Montreal. I listen to Luxiriamusic.com all the time, and am a big fan of the Lounge King's show. I'll make it a point to tune in to your show.

An exploration of the musical equivalent of film noir... "musique noire" perhaps? Not necessarily music from film noir soundtracks but also music that conveys the primary moods of classic film noir. Kind of hard to cover this topic adequately in 15 minutes... but hey, its a start.

Well, it happens at least a couple of times a year. A few spaghetti western refugees make their way into the Mauna Loa Lounge and insist on nothing but spaghetti western soundtracks. I spin a few tunes to keep Ringo, Sartana, and the rest of the boys happy until they git up and mosey on out...

A bit of Swedish Exotica courtesy of my friend Adam Axelzon and his father Bo, from Stockholm. Songs from a recent, privately pressed CD called Tiki Twilight. A unique combination of sounds and styles, blending exotica and 50s Afro-Cuban jazz... all by way of Sweden.

What do Chet Atkins and Lalo Schifrin have in common? Not much really, except:
-both made some great music
-both had birthdays very recently (Chet Atkins: June 20, 1924 –June 30, 2001 / Lalo Schifrin: June 21,  1932– )
-though their music is not exotica, both do perform songs that are not out of place in a Tiki bar like the Mauna Loa Lounge.

Listen in for a couple of selections by Atkins and a couple by Schifrin.

I listen to your show, it's really great, but what is the deal with the Lounge King? Does he really live in Mexico? Does he really have an eye patch? Is Atomsphere69 really his lover? If she's in Paris, however does she get to Mexico City often enough to satisfy their passion?

Thanks for listening...

As for the Lounge King and Agent 69... What can I say? They are an international jet-setting couple. I saw them in Montreal this past weekend but they do indeed live in Mexico, for the next few months anyway. And for any more info, you'll have to PM me...

A somewhat abridged version of my Thrifting for Tunes show can still be heard on the Montreal radio version of the Lounge King show for listeners in the Montreal area (Mix 96, Sundays, 6-8 pm).

But for the full, weekly version of Thrifting for Tunes, LuxuriaMusic is the place to be.

In an effort to finally put together that theremin/ukulele duo I've been meaning to form, I finally got around to fooling with the theremin I bought last year. An incredibly difficult instrument to master... and I’m far from becoming a virtuoso. So listen in to the show for a small sampling of songs featuring folks who can actually carry a tune... or at least create a few otherwordly effects.

I was lucky enough to cross paths recently with an old business acquaintance, noted talent scout and big wheel, Jackie “Teak” Lazar.

These days, Jackie’s schtick is played out under the spotlights rather than behind the scenes...

Seems a "certain someone" somehow made off with our entire supply of rum at the end of the night on last week's show. So the description for this week's show is rather simple: we’re out of rum... we’re drinking Italian wine... we’re listening to a few appropriate tunes to help wash the red stuff down.

Tuesday, November 21:
Songs originally planned for a Columbus Day show last month that I never got around to doing... Here they are just in time for Thanksgiving (well, for listeners in the US at least). Some amazing stuff from a Kurt Weill and Ira Gershwin work tape that I’ve been forcing on others for years... but I don’t think anyone finds the lyrics as clever as I do. Plus, a great track by Lou Monte (well, maybe you need to have an Italian-American background to appreciate this one).
