Found this on a VW forum :D

Introducing the "grass shack" bus.... was used back in the day for a Hawaiian/ surf style clothing store. It was used locally, even the parents remember the stores they had, ,lol...

I found some old flyers stuffed behind the seat.

Has original 36 horse... just got it to fire up after 37 years of sitting.... and it has crank start tin.... made in march 59'..... m-coded rev-limiter.. still on it.....

you can see a couple spots I have buffed and it will buff pretty good....

What a great piece of history.

I'm impressed by several things

  1. that the van still runs, even though my name is painted on its side
  2. that British Columbia hosted a Polynesian revue in 1969 ... is this the northernmost reach of Polynesian tiki in North American during the 1960's?

I love the surfer/surfboard logo for the Grass Shack.

I can see it fully restored to what it must have looked like in its prime. Too bad the VW Routan is not going to look even remotely this cool.

Nice bit of Hawaiiana.

'nother one :D

You know, most of those scratches will buff right out.

Wow! The VW van was quite the Tiki mobile.

I like that! Nice! Gives me ideas to add some tiki/pirate to my 1964 bug?

Have you seen the VW bus bars.
