From Arthur C. Clarke's obit:

"He also spent several months a year living in New York, and it was there
that he met Kubrick, who was keen on making a science-fiction movie. The
idea for "2001" was born at a meeting in Trader Vic's bar, the filmmaker
requiring Clarke to write out a full-length novel before they worked on
a script."

Could an Easter Island mug have been the inspiration for that mysterious black rectangular monolith? I like to thnk so.

Arthur C. Clarke also talks about this meeting in his somewhat lengthy introduction to the audiobook version of 2001.

I just heard about this famous meeting place for Kubrik and Clarke on the CBC radio show "Under the Influence"

BTW: this is an awesome show for anyone interested in advertising.
