Oops, my bad. Actually I've been told my funnybone is thicker and longer than most guys. Unfortunately sarcastic humor doesn't translate as well to text without one of these >

(...probably why the hilarious sarcastic wit of "He Who Must Remain Nameless" has been missing from this board for so long)

Mr. TikiGoddess and I were in Vegas this past weekend (12/8) and we went to the Trader Vic's. I was desperate to love the place, I really wanted it to be great, but alas, I hated it. In a nutshell, the service was HORRIBLE to the point of nonexistent. Both hostess and waiters were clueless. The food was good once they actually gave me what I ordered after a snafu, which was to be expected due to the crappy service even though the place was nearly empty.
Cocktails: They have no idea what Menehune Juice is even though it is on the menu (for $11). I ordered it and the waiter and bartender were baffled. Hence, no Menehune Juice for me. Mai Tais were good however. I wont be going back and I am really bummed about it.
Now compare and contrast with the Mermaid Casino on Freemont St. Service was EXCELLENT, standard issue (non tiki) cocktails are KILLER and free, costing whatever you tip the excellent polite friendly waitresses. Mr. TikiGoddess had to drag me away kicking and screaming. I was ready to have my mail forwarded to the place.
Also the PEPPERMILL restaurant on the Strip has the COOLEST bar/lounge I have ever seen. The decor was like an acid trip. Its pitch black inside and lit with pink and purple neon, and there's a Shag-style fireplace in the center and flames come up out of a pool of water. Wow!This is surrounded by a circle of soft couches. Some of the walls are covered in what I can only describe as sheets of bizzare Valley of the Dolls style roses. You have to see it to believe it. No tiki drinks, just standard issue cocktails, beer. I cant wait to go back this den of iniquity!!!
P.S. The show The Rat Pack is Back is FANTASTIC.

I'm sorry to hear about poor service in recent posts. When we were there in October, the service was actually one of the highlights. Our waiter was almost too attentive. Oh well.

I agree with your comments about the Peppermill Fireside Lounge. Really cool retro-70s place. Great service and drinks there.

Tsk, Tsk. Betting on when a brand new tiki bar is going to close seems more than a little cynical even for this progress-weary group.

Live aloha and support tiki in all its incarnations.

..you would be correct, ..if they were actually betting on the closing of a tiki bar....however there is nothing really here at trader vics that warrents calling it a tiki bar to begin with...just another new bar on the strip destined to close in a year.

All us vegas locals should help Tahiti Joe's--they try to get it right. On my visit last week, the drinks were very good (although in a glass, not a mug), the decor well-tikified, and the music is now half island (caribbean). The TVs are on sports at the bar but the sound is off. This isn't Forbidden Island Alameda by any means but it's the best we have right now. The food and service is great, also and prices are reasonable. (No, I don't work for them)

(I know this is the Trader Vic's thread but Tahiti Joe's is only down the street for any visitors who are disappointed in Trader Vic's)

Aloha!

like maikai from the 50s the peppermill is a survivior from the 70s.

very sad that besides the implosions of many old classic casinos
full of atmosphere and history like dunes, landmark, sands, hacienda, aladdin,
el rancho, desert inn, stardust, new frontier ...
dozens of smaller places like the peppermill fireside lounge are demolished
to make way for parkinglots and "clean" stuff like wynns etc.

ouch!! so bad it's good!! awesome tacky place...just what vegas should be. I used to love hangin out at the old algiers bar/casino. talk about old school...decor right outta old 60's vegas...you can sit at the bar and look out through the windows behind it to the pool, which was an oasis surrounded by palms in the middle of the hotel complex which surrounded it....this would have been the place to hold tiki oasis in vegas if they didn't tear it down a few years back......
