Beyond Tiki, Bilge, and Test / Beyond Tiki

The A-Frames of Harbor Blvd. + a couple of other things.

Pages: 1 27 replies

Tiki-Kate and I decided to drive the length of Harbor Boulevard from Costa Mesa to Fullerton and take a picture of every A-frame along the way; with the exception of one International House of Pancakes in Anaheim we did just that. (I still may go back and shoot it. )

We started in Costa Mesa where I grew up. Memorable A-frames The Pup 'N' Taco on the Corner of Harbor and Wilson and The Bel Congo Motel near Harbor and Mesa Verde Dr. East are long gone but there still were a few.

The Pasta Connection, Costa Mesa

Wienerschnitzel, Costa Mesa

RED-E-RENTALS Costa Mesa • This was cooler when it was actually red.

Ala Moana Apartments Costa Mesa • Not on Harbor Blvd. but you can see it in the background.

Former site of the Kona Lanes, Costa Mesa.

Bali Hi Mobile Homes Lodge, Santa Ana • No A-Frames here but we had to stop and check it out. We drove around the inside - no Tiki’s but lots of overweight cats.

I wanted to see the former site of The Kono Hawaii and it looks as though a Church is now on the spot, so we kept driving.

Another Wienerschnitzel this one in Santa Ana.

Willow Tree Lodge Motel, Fullerton

Blue Hawaii at the Fox Theater in Fullerton.

One Way Burger, Fullerton

Not as many than I’d thought there would be but more than 5 is good. :)

It was an exciting day of urban archaeology.

We had some fabulous Is This Witco? moments. My favorite was the owl. Even better than finding the owl was Boris asking the big scary homeowner with the manly tattoos if we could take pictures of the owl.

I especially enjoyed the Bali Hi since I really love cool palm trees.

I also liked the way that the Willow Tree Lodge displayed their address.

We stopped at several rummage and garage sales and a couple of thrift stores. No major finds, but I was thrilled to get a green Caliente Tropics mug.

thats stuff I see everyday on my pool route.
I have always wanted to take pics of some of those.

when you guys gonna swing by my place and check out my tiki stuff?

I would have called you Jeff, but there was a surf show that night, so I wasn't sure if you'd be available to hang out.

One thing I forgot to mention was that I thought it was kind of cool that the streets at the Bali Hi all have tropical names. Here we are at the corner of Lanai Way and Kona Lane.

Mine or the Tiki's? We're both very old.

Maybe we should grow some Badass ponytails.

It's still 1973 right?

its 1973 in my mind,

I thought Pop-eye had big GUNS not GAMS! LOL j/k - I was more worried about the way that Tiki has been trussed up to that pole - it looks like a form of torture with the band across the eyes.

Let's play "which one is older and/or more weathered?"

Let's play "which one is older and/or more weathered?"
i would say it's the funny looking one.

Pasta Connection (A frame #1)is gone.

Jeez! When did that happen? :o

Drove past the building this afternoon. Looks like its been down for a while. The original structure is pretty much hollow, the A is gone, and they're just framing out the new exterior walls.

Kinda funny that this is the only version of this pic on this page. I was secretly thinking "OMG! Boris has HUGE calves!" :o But then I went back and saw the un-doctored pic on the first page! Whew!

That stinks I'm sure by the end of the month the new roof will be Spanish tile like the rest of that part of Costa Mesa. Which I think is mandatory.
