Don Tiki and Waitiki coming to Berlin. Hurray!

Hell yeah! WAITIKI's playing the Wassermusik Festival as a 7-piece band. We're bringing back Abe Lagrimas ("the Space Kadet") on vibes & drums, and adding some special guests: Lopaka Colon (exotica/Latin percussion & birdcalls), Zaccai Curtis (piano), and the rest of the gang -- TMoX, Laughing Boy, Ms. Helenini, and me. Should be a good time. Any of you that made it to our sextet show can attest to our new approach: mixing classic exotica with modern Latin jazz.

Helenini and I are both playing with Don Tiki too!

I'll be there too. I can't miss 2 of my favorite bands.
I went to Mexico, and Fort Lauderdale twice to hear Waitiki, I can't miss the band in Europe !
And I always wanted to see and hear Don Tiki !

Will it be a free event ? There's not much info about everything (place, dates...). I'd like to take my plane tickets and book a hotel early.

I'm planning to come for the tiki weekend.

Besides the music, does anyone know if there will be tikis/carvers ?

Hai Kai, Germany's foremost Tiki sculptor, will be in attendance. I myself still have no idea if I can attend, if so it will be with some kind of slide lecture for sure:

HKW calling my closing set on the final sunday afternoon “chill out” is bothering me a little now and then. I don't intend to play slow techno music at all.
What do you think when you read the words “chill out” and “dj” together?

I think they are a little confused there, and too eager to appeal to and draw in the young scenesters. That's why they decided to not go with the classic Tiki environs that Moritz proposed and chose some young "hip" design/event team. But generally I am for anything that might convert unsuspecting young urbanites to Tiki...if it is Tiki.

THEIR intend is to convert people to Wassermusik - somehow Exotica falls into that field and who am I to argue. Having explored the borders of exotica and surf for years the combination is very welcome. My early DJ nights in Hamburg St. Pauli were sublined “From Hamburg nach Tahiti“.

Since nobody else took on the hassle of compiling a Google Calender for the series of events, I did it today.

Here’s the web link:
http://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=kookle%40mac.com&ctz=Europe/Berlin

Here’s the iCal adress:
http://www.google.com/calendar/ical/kookle%40mac.com/public/basic.ics

Plain XML:
http://www.google.com/calendar/feeds/kookle%40mac.com/public/basic

Feedburner:
http://feeds.feedburner.com/KahunaKawentzmannCalender

I find the iCal data to be the most practical, since it holds all events and presents them in the correct (timeline) order.

What a line-up! Blew all my dough at Hukilau... but I can dream, can't I?

For those who do attend, check out the bookshop at the HKW for CDs of the Exotica and Surf bands that play(ed) there. My two albums will be available too at the shop and the Blackseapearl handbag stall, where I will be around most of the time. I’m looking forward to meet some Tiki Centralites!

What a great event with great people. Fantastic concerts of Waitiki, I Belli, and of course Don Tiki, providing us a show we'll never forget. Also, great after parties in the crazy Berliner nights with everybody. Fun, fun, fun.

Photos, friends, photos please! What bad luck this year, to be in Germany when the Hukilau happened, and to be in LA when this was on. Well, at least I will make it to the Tiki Oasis...

That little bassplayer of Don Tiki in that pic, she was the biggest suprise to me - she had such an understated presence and than she steps up to the mic and it’s her vocals I already dug on the recordings. When I close my eyes I see a female crooner from the Julie London mold.

virani posted on 07/30/2008

that wasn't a big surprise for me, as I remember the video they made for the airline compagny that goes to Hawaii, with her singing "an occasional man".

Floyd told me that video helped the airline sells Mai Tai on board !!

http://youtube.com/watch?v=F1Gy_4NXGq8

Also with the video I have of the concert at the Kahiki goodbye party.

But you're right. The all band, with the fantastic Lopaka Colon on bird calls and percussion, and Abe on vibes made me lost my jaw. Definitly a band to see live.
