Tiki Taane - New Zealand artist

I think this video by Tiki Taane - a New Zealand artist is damn impressive - a form of modern exotica. The name of this song is 'Tangaroa - God of the Sea

This video is good too - a more pop oriented song called 'Always on My Mind', even more entertaining because 'TIKI' is displayed in lights.

Most of the other Tiki Taane videos have a more urban/dub feel to them.

Enjoy! ...

I like that "Tangaroa" track. Very primal!!!

I don't like it at all.
It makes me think of some kind of bad Eno's new age music made to promote NZ Rugby on television...

It is just a haka (which I think Tiki's father may have written from memory) set to music, so virani's comparison to the All Blacks isn't far off the mark. I love it and think it's an incredibly powerful track - understanding the context probably aids in the appreciation. I posted it on shout a while back but didn't post in here as I thought it would be too industrial for TC tastes! The second track is also very much Maori in feel - that acoustic strumming and singing style has become traditional in NZ. If you have seen the film "Once Were Warriors" you will know what I'm talking about.
Tiki is a bit of local legend in the music scene down this way, having been a soundman for and member of various bands covering genres from metal to dub before launching his solo career. He has some great T-shirts for sale on his website with Tiki designs by Otis Frizzell.

There is a lot of great contemporary Maori and Polynesian music coming out of NZ, but also a ton of pretty lame R&B and hip hop stuff which doesn't float my boat. If anyone is interested I have some good links to info and sounds of traditional (ie ancient) Maori music and instruments.

Edit to add the shirt..gotta get one:

I really liked it, I felt like I could listen to it over and over and it set a certain mood that I like.

Its been getting airplay on radio here in Australia on Triple J, I love it :D Great mix of modern music with the traditional sound and spirit of the maori culture/haka, which has been kept in tact and dealth with respect. Very nice
