I just read in my local paper that Cheeta turned 74!!! I had no idea that he was still alive. Congrats also to Cheeta for winning a Spanish Film comedy award for his past work in the Tarzan movies and shows! He is the best part of those shows!

Cheeta also paints and his paintings are available through the CHEETA website. http://cheetathechimp.org/
He lives in the Palm Springs area, too bad he never made it to the PS Oasis!

I saw a story about his birthday on MSNBC. Palm Springs must agree with him. Apparently Cheeta is the oldest living Chimpanzee... fine Beatnik paintings too!

Unfortunately, the story about the Cheeta from the Weissmuller Tarzan films still being alive is not true. The Washington Post has a good article, written by an author who was hired to write an authorized biography of Cheeta. His research led to the discovery that the chimpanzee at the C.H.E.E.T.A foundation is a younger chimpanzee.

I was one of the people who went to the C.H.E.E.T.A Foundation, made a donation, and received an abstract painting done by their Cheeta. I have no regrets about doing so - the painting looks great, and currently hangs in my tiki room today. So the painting may not have been done by the actual Cheeta that appeared in the Weissmuller Tarzan films - having a painting done by an actual chimpanzee is still a very cool thing to have in one's tiki room (I have mine hanging next to a pair of Shag prints), and the CHEETA Foundation is a worthy foundation that does good work.
