While I share your opinion that "....some tiki is better than no tiki at all ", allow me to note that the observation "...some have complained that it’s not over-the-top enough" perpetuates the common misconception that there are only two possible "nouveau" Tiki routes to take: "Tasteful" Tiki and "over-the-top" Tiki. The emphasis of the media on the fact that Tiki shall be "fun" and "kitschy" has today's restaurateurs running scared and ignores the fact that Tiki style had some unique artistic design and decor concepts -so "restrained" Tiki Lite places like the Luau are born. But there can be a third way: Contemporary Tiki that is modern and stylish yet true to the spirit of Tiki, as the example of the "Kukui" in Oxford shows: http://www.tikicentral.com/viewtopic.php?topic=30316&forum=2 |
