Suncoast Ukulele Festival to be "A Tuneful Tonic For Troubled Times"
April 8-11, 2009

If there's one positive thing our economy has in common with the Great Depression, it's the surging popularity of a charming little four-stringed instrument, the ukulele. And, from April 8 through 11, 2009, it will be the centerpiece of an educational and performance festival right here on the Suncoast.

"You can't help but smile when you hear the ukulele," says Nina Coquina, Nokomis resident and president of the Suncoast Ukulele Society, and organizer of the festival.

If you've ever wanted to learn to play the uke, the festival features three days of workshops and intimate house concerts with both local and nationally known ukulele artists, and culminates with a free concert Friday night in downtown Venice at Centennial Park, and a free full-day festival Saturday, April 11 at the Nokomis Beach Pavilion which will include food, ukuleles for sale, and raffles offering products from local merchants. Saturday's event will benefit the American Asperger's Association.
