Waikiki Womb addition (The ʻOna ʻAluʻalu bar)

The Waikiki Womb is getting an addition.
I'll bet those of you that visited the Waikiki Womb on the LA Home Bar Tour didn't even know there was a 7' x 11' room hidden behind the bar.
This was the original home owner's darkroom from the 1930s. He was a film producer.
We used this room for storage but I've decided to move the actual bar into this room.
It will be accessed through the hidden door disguised as a mug shelf, harking back to the days of prohibition era hidden bars. A nice small, dark and intimate bar is what I'm shooting for.
It will have the bar on the right side of the room and an upholstered booth on the left side.
Here's the progress so far.

The results of a drive down to OA.

Setup my work bench...surprisingly stable :D

Starting to clean off and remove the existing shelving.

Starting to build two shelve units behind bar on left side of room.

Decided to use the rigid bamboo matting for the walls.
Took a few tries to find the right adhesive for the matting. Finally used 3M Super90 spray. This stuff sticks!

Back to the shelves behind the bar. Used some left over cedar I had. Bar is going to smell great. :D

Bamboo slatting runs around the lower sides of the walls.

Back to the shelves.

Tapa accents that will be above each booth seat on right side of room.

Ceiling treatment. I never heard Ben comment on silver ceilings but thought it best to cover them.:D

Starting to frame out walls with bamboo.

Wrapping to cover joint cuts and screws, details details!

.

Well that's where I'm at right now.
I'll post some more pics as I finish up the room.
Got to go pull out about a dozen bamboo splinters, little buggers are hard to see!

Update:
Got the booth base built.
I'm almost finished with the bamboo trim around the room.
Anyone know a good upholstery shop in the Valley?

Booth on the left side of the room:

Heres a shot of the mug rack/secret door I'm working on.

Still a ways to go.

Very nice work. I love the "womb" idea, kinda like then den room so many people used to have.

Nice. GROG like.

M

Thanks guys.
We'll have to have a proper "Rumpus Room Ohana" christening of the new bar to assure good mana.

T

Wow, Murph, that looks FANTASTIC!!! Can't wait to move in... er, I mean... see it in person!

I bet Manuel and I COULD move in back there and you wouldn't even notice us!
We could even sneak out in the middle of the night and work on building the rest of the addition... sort of like the Cobbler and the Elves... but more like the Tiki Barkeep and the Menehunes!

Got quite a bit done this past week.
Even with taking time out for a PuPu Party and Rumpus Room Tuesdays

Finished all the bamboo trim details in the room.

Then put up a thatch awning over the bar.

Got the most important part, the bar, all done and in.

Now I'm waiting to get the booth seats back from the upholsterer.
Then I've got proper room lighting to figure out and install and then various decorations to fill out the bar and then it's Happy Hour!

Stay tooned...

u r a mad man - nice stuff!

Wow that looks great! I like the tiki light switch cover too. It's always the little touches that go a long way.

M

Thanks.
Still got to paint the switch, his tongue, red.

Holy cow, you're an animal! Nice work!

:drink:

Very cool. great attention to detail. Covering nails and screws is a real pain depending on the amount. Nice work!

Murph,

Great job, the little both is cool & the tiles look great. Does the old phone on the wall work? I can't remember the last time I dialed a phone.

Hey Mike,
The old phone works but you can only dial old numbers.
It's great if you want to call dead people, seems we get to keep our numbers when we cross over. :D

the booth looks AWESOME.. A great place to just sit, relax, have a drink and chat with a friend...

From darkroom to paradise in 2 months, great work!

A womb with many views! The booth looks fantastic.
Killer job Murph!

this is my first time looking through this Nicely executed. love the pop of the green

K

Very cool Murph! I dig the secret door. If you've seen my room thread you know I love hidden surprises like that.

As someone who loves to print in my darkroom, I hate to see a darkroom go, but it obviously went to very good use!

Will we get a chance to see it up close in a home bar tour this year?

The tiles are killer now that they are in place, Murph!

I, like Hiphipahula, can't wait to hang out at the 'Womb again.

Thanks for posting!

The secret room is absolutely amazing. Strictly VIP's, stock it with top shelf rums, have to have 1000+ TC posts to get in! Great work, the booth upholstery is one of my favorite parts with the green button tuck action. And where did you find the ceramic haging tiles? I've been looking and asking around to all the importers that I've come across for a looong time, but nobody seems to know where to find any (if they even understand what I'm talking about.) If you don't mind giving up your secrets, let me know!

So when we gonna party again Murph? Can't wait to see it!

Cowabunga! That looks amazing! Cheers! Quick question, what is OA?

AF

Hey Murph,
It's A-mazing! You're able to bring your ideas into reality so quickly. Jason's velvet looks awesome in that space, and to see it's reflection in the bar mirror, perfect!

Awesome job, Murph! Can't wait to see it in person! What's keeping the Chinese tiles in place, the tension of the wrapped twine? They look great!

Thanks.
It really does look way better with the proper "effects" lighting on.
I need to get a tripod and set my camera up for some low level light shots.

Found an old ship's oil lamp and wired it up for the Womb.

Also hung a beachcomber style light from Polynesiac.

Looking great Murph! Are you gonna
move this over to the Home Tiki Bar
section soon?

:o Damn, that was quick!
