Do we have "must have" music list?

Hey everyone,
I'm still a Tiki newbie and other than some here and there Martin Denny, I'm clueless to the "classic" or "essential" items for my listening collection. Do we have a list somewhere of the tried and true "must haves" when it comes to Tiki music?

I would love to hear your suggestions!

Thanks!

Arthur Lyman: Taboo

Robert Drasnin Voodoo on Dionysus records.

modern bands.
Tikiyaki Orchestra
Ape
Clouseux (sp?)

there are ton's of others,
but those are must haves off the top of my head.

On CD, I suggest the "Hukilau Hulas" CD. Other stuff here.

On vinyl, I suggest Savage Tihatis to get the Mai Kai feeling...

Arguably the BIG TRIO would be Martin Denny, Les Baxter and Arthur Lyman. They put out lots of music and you could go broke buying it all. I have the following compilations, which I think provide a good representation:

  • The Exotic Moods of Les Baxter
  • The Exotic Sounds of Martin Denny
  • The Very Best of Arthur Lyman

Of course, there are plenty of others, including Yma Sumac, Don Tiki, and others mentioned above.

Check out Digitiki.com podcast to get an idea.

Good luck,

Les Baxter is absolutely essential. Seek out:

Ritual of the Savage
Tamboo
Caribbean Moonlight
Ports of Pleasure
African Jazz
Jungle Jazz
The Sacred Idol

There are other great Les Baxter albums, but these are the best in the exotica genre, IMHO.

Get the Exotic Moods comp if you can find it.

If you had to pick just one of the albums above, I would go with "Tamboo"!!!! (they are all good, though)

Along with the previously mentioned LPs, you may want to skulk ebay for a few months and look for-

Ted Auletta's "Exotica"
Augie Colon's "Sophisticated Savage"
Tak Shindo's "Brass & Bamboo"
The Surfmen's "The Sound of Exotic Island" and
Marty Wilson's "Jungala"

Happy hunting!
