Charles McPhee - Tahitian Innocence Velvet Painting

Pages: 1 2 replies

Today at the Alameda Antique Fair I found this beauty. It's an original velvet painting by Charles McPhee from 1961, signed and dated. I didn't know about him prior today, but I guess he lived a good long life (1910-2002) and was taught how to paint on velvet by Leeteg. I liked it right off the bat, but my girlfriend felt it was creepy...I walked away, but something in my gut told me to go back and barter a bit. It ended up costing me $90 and I think it was worth every penny.

Hey you should post this in the Show Me Your Velvet Painting thread...that was why I didn't see it :)

Good find though..creepy or not!

$90? Uh, yeah...not a bad buy. Especially considering one I just saw on a local auction site went for close to $1K NZ...
I posted a link to the movie/doco "Velvet Dreams" in the velvet thread, and a good portion of it is about Charlie McPhee. One of only a couple of guys working in the Leeteg tradition here and probably the best. Flippin sweet score!
