TikiG, Thanks for posting your stuff, been having fun looking at So Cal pre-Tiki. Who came first, Curt or Mannie?

I know I'm going to regret asking this, but what do you think they mean by the word "smart"? Savory Meals And Real Tikis! |

Now we know the answer thanks to this post from Bigbro over on the Tahiti South Seas thread: Herman came first! Seems as though Herman Klabounde started the Tropic Isle then sold it to Mannie who sold to to Curt. DC |

Herman? Curt? Sounds like a bunch of South Sea-crazy Germans to me! |

So, it looks like Herman started the Tropic Isle while he owned the Tahiti down the road in Santa Monica. Here is a matchbook cover with the Tahiti Restaurant and the inside of the matchbook advertises the Tropic Isle in Venice. So I say Herman was Number 1. DC |

And I think Curt was definitely second - another one of Curt's matchbooks. DC |

But wait, there's more! Frank Vanstone also owned the Tropic Isle!
