Joe Escalante talks about Tiki drinks on Indie 103

Joe Escalante interviews Marie the mixologist and bar manager from Don the Beachcomber. They discuss Tiki history while she makes drinks on the air. Jon Paul even had a shirt that matched the background. The Tikiyaki orchestra provides the music. Too cool. If Jon got some pictures, it would be even cooler if he would share them. Look for Marie's reaction to a person and a rum who shall remain nameless.

We have come far, friends! Kudos for being an excellent ambassador, Marie.

Happy to see the publicity!

Thanks Tim,
Marie had told me about this.
but I forgot to look it up.

and Congrats to Marie.

Marie has a way better radio voice than Joe Escalante. They should give her her own show...except for then who would make me Zombies?

P.S. I thought Indie 103 was off the air? Is it just online now? That's a hell of a studio for an online radio show.

That was cool, Marie actually mixed me up a Missionary's Downfall herself the other night. It was interesting to hear about the history of that drink.

I kind of wonder about Joe Escalante. He kept wanting to talk about Donkey Shows and getting underage girls drunk. :) I'm just kidding, kudos to him for putting Tiki in the spotlight !!

Marie had a great "on-screen" vibe. I could see her and the BigBro co-hosting their own internet Tiki talk show. In the age of YouTube, why not ??

yes Indie 103.1 is online only now.
and I think that you can also podcast certain djs shows.
I heard that Steve Jones(Jonesy) is still on there too.

Marie your calm demeanor and presentation was on point! Thank you for shooting Joe down on the Jimmy Buffet comment and then they showed pictures of Ron Jeremy referencing parrot heads! haaaaaa! You are a great ambassador for Don's and we all appreciate the hard work you put in to create such delicious authentic concoctions that you have resurrected. Whenever i see you behind the bar i rest assure that quality control, presentation and service will be top notch!! Don would be proud!

Joe is planning another show featuring LA Trader Vic's soon. Maybe we'll see a series? I'd love to see Mike Sr from Tiki Ti on a future show.
You people do know he was kidding with Marie don't you? I will bet all of you here that he has been to more Tiki bars around the world then just about anyone.
His brother Greg Escalante is the well known low brow Tiki artist whom a lot of you already know.
Here is Joe's Yelp review for Beverly Hill's Trader Vic's.

This is by far the best restuarant in the world, according to me. It is true that I am easily amused but this is the only chain restaurant that I will ever worship. Appetizers in the bar are the way to go and the first time you go there you must order the Samoan Fog Cutter. You can try every other drink on the menu but you will always come back to that so save your money. You need a lot of money to eat here but it's worth it.

Suggested appetizers are Flaming Cho Cho Beef, Spare Ribs, and Duck in Plum Sauce.

I usually save the dining room for special occasions or when I'm eating with more than just my wife. I pretend my wife is my mistress when I eat there because I see a lot of that going on there.

Celebrity sitings tell the whole story. I've seen Betty White, and the cast from that Amish reality show that was on a few years ago. That's it.

Dress up when you come here, don't be a jerk. Non plasma TV in the bar is a nice touch. Music is also awesome; Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman, Les Baxter, etc.

The Vandals make a point of going to all the Trader Vics whenever possible. Hamburg, London, Tokyo, etc. There used to be one in the Plaza hotel in NYC. Those were the best of times. I used to be so happy there I would smoke a cigarette.
