I am very proud of the work we did on this album. It's a product I believe in, and there is nothing else like this band in the Tiki world!

Nice !! I've been looking forward to this. I think the cover captures the spirit of the band perfectly.

Will it be available on iTunes ?? (Sorry, I'm into "green" storage media). :)

TM
tiki mick posted on 07/30/2010

It probably will, but I got to say, Spike (Lucky Designs) is an OUTSTANDING artist and designer, so whatever he puts out there, you are probably going to want to own. The Vinyl album alone will last a long time. I don't see that so much as not being eco-friendly, but more like "put this on the wall of your tiki-bar friendly!"

Seriously, Spike should one day have his own art opening. (It's not just for our band that he has designed stuff!)

You know what I did the other day, John-o? I went in front of all the skippers, the captains, and I went on record: You are with me now. You know what that means, John? You have no idea, my friend! It means NO ONE can touch you. Even Jesus Christ himself can't touch you! From now on, I'm your man! My wife, my kids, can hold their heads up in any part of the neighborhood...forget about it, in all the 5 boroughs, I am KNOWN! If anyone asks, tell them Lucas, from Mulberry street sent you!

J
JOHN-O posted on 07/30/2010

Good to know that I'm "juiced up" with a Tiki made man. :)

I'll be orbiting the Northern (Cal) Tiki boroughs in a few weeks and don't want to run into trouble.

Downloaded it this morning from CDBaby.com....it sounds great! Highlights for me were The Hidden Village (with Crazy Al, DJ Bonebrake, and Gary Brandin), Moonshine Mai Tai, which really shows how good Bong's steel guitar playing has gotten, Longboard Baby and Suck 'Em Up, which are just really fun rock'n'roll songs. I can already tell this is going to be one of my favorite albums of this year...nice work guys!

Don't worry fellas, I still need a hard copy CD for the collection!

I am glad you all are digging it! I feel there is a real nice variety, something for everyone who is into Tiki. Yes, at it's heart it is a rockabilly record, but there are a few songs that border on "exotica" and two songs that are very much surf, albeit with vocals!

L
Luckydesigns posted on 08/05/2010

Here's a close up look at the vinyl artwork. Still waiting on the vinyl to arrive, but I though I'd share the cover with you anyway. Check it out!! You can buy it here: http://www.thehulagirlsband.com

The vinyls have arrived! I heard it on Spike's vintage turntable (mono, no less!) and it sounds fantastic! So good, that I wasn't actually sure it was us! Ha ha!

Very Cool Tunes. Stellar Album.
As mentioned previously, taking a classic genre and infusing it with an exotic twist. Totally great end result. Love this album. Two great sounds that go great together. Why was this never done before?
Title Track is my personal favorite so far. Also dig Volcano and it stuck in my head, but in a good way.
I happen to love the rockabilly and all Hawaiian music so this bad boy is a no brainer.
You all did a great job. My expectations were pretty high, and you surpassed them.
The Kings of Hulabilly.

No, seriously....Free Bong.

TM
tiki mick posted on 09/01/2010

Thanks Gavin! An old school lurker!

I agree, the concept is real different! Except for Elvis in Hawaii, and a few Junior Brown tunes...it really has not been done before. Plenty of exotica and surf bands out there right now, but none that are doing the Rockabilly/Hawaiian thing! (Yet).....

And don't forget, there are only a limited amount of Vinyls left! Get yours now! (they sound muy fabuloso!!)

This is a great group of guys as well as an awesome band. At Oasis we hosted their cd release and signing and they were nothing but gracious. And fortunately for us, we happened to get the cd which is really great! Don't miss an opportunity to pick this one up!

This should work: http://thehulagirls.bigcartel.com/product/hula-girls-the-curse-of-the-tiki-cd

And if not, contact "Lucky Designs" via PM, and he should be able to take care of you!

And while you are at it, say hello to my 13,000 relatives in Sevilla!

Yes, 1000s of cousins over there! (seems like I am related to half the Gitanos that live in Southern Spain! I am always discovering a new distant relative!)

After you have listened to the CD/LP, I would be interested in what you thought of it!

Awesome CD. This was another of my TIki Oasis purchases and I'm loving the fact that I can't put this into any single category but it's own. Curse of the TIki, Hulabilly Honey, Longboard Baby, The Hidden Village...so many fun songs on this record. And I can't wait to see another live show.

By the shores of Gitche Gumee,
By the shining Big-Sea-Water,
Stood the wigwam of Nokomis,
Daughter of the Moon, Nokomis.
Dark behind it rose the forest,
Rose the black and gloomy pine-trees,
Rose the firs with cones upon them;
Bright before it beat the water,
Beat the clear and sunny water,
Beat the shining Big-Sea-Water.

Hey Jeff! We're in AZ this coming Sunday, for Zog's Tiki Lounge Party at the Rhythm Room.
Then, on Oct 9th, The Hula Girls are opening up for former Blaster, Dave Alvin, at The Coach House! Discount tickets are available from our web store: http://www.thehulagirlsband.com

Hope we can get some friends out to either show!

TM
tiki mick posted on 09/21/2010

I am going to try real hard and make it to the Blaster's show.

The way I see it is that the Hula Girls are a Tiki original. There is no other band even remotely playing anything similar. A totally original concept by Spike Lucky Designs!
