Tiki in DC or Richmond Area

Pages: 1 10 replies

I will be visiting the DC & Richmond Area in Virginia February 9-15. Is there any Tiki I can cram into my trip?

Sorry to say that DC has pretty much gone bone dry on tiki,
except for a classic/exotic cocktail scene which is growing.
For some new takes on some exotic classics you might try:

Farmers & Fishers at the Georgetown waterfront
Featuring well crafted tiki drinks made with housemade syrups & fresh juices

PX and The Majestic in Alexandria
Often feature classic exotic cocktails along with
brand new cocktails from some of DC brightest mixologists

Cubra Libre in DC
The rum bar chain has made it to DC
Over 70 rums on the menu.
(note, these four are trendy and pricey - $10 and up for drinks)

For some very good takes on old school Chinese places who
serve a damn fine Mai Tai and other classics at reasonable prices:

Shanghai Village and Foong Lin in Bethesda (just outside of DC in Maryland)
Barely a shred of tiki (just a few mugs) but the drinks are
very good and some of the best Chinese food I've had anywhere.
Fyi, the chef/owner of Shanghai Village used to work at Trader Vic's

You may want to try posting directly to the Maryland/DC/Virginia area locals' board- http://marylanddctiki.proboards.com/index.cgi under "events" as a number of folks are sometimes more easily reached there.

There are a number of us locals spread out across the DC/MD/VA landscape but if the timing works out, I'm guessing at least a few of us would be willing to meet up over good drinks at Shanghai Village or some such.

A number of us will be headed towards Atlanta not long thereafter for the Trader Vic's gathering there, though so it sort of depends on everyone's travel plans.

Thanks you have been a great help!
I will check out that other board as well.
I will be coming back there again so I will put Vic's in Atlanta on my list :)
Oooooh Good Chinese :9
That works too.
Rum bars always a plus, also exotic Cocktails. Sounds like my 5 days will be crammed with good stuff. Thank you very much jwtiki & Sabina!!!!
You are really awesome for taking the time!

Interestng that this came up. I am in the DC area right now. I figured that there was no tiki here so I didn't even go looking. It's a short trip and I'll be back in LA thursday anyway so I can pop by Tiki Ti.

The Tiki Ti is a 15 min walk from my apartment!
Let me know when you swing by we can grab a drink!

DC and Richmond are pretty much barren wastelands when it comes to Tiki these days.

It's a stretch, but there's an old chinese restaurant in richmond called the Tiki Tiki

Decent drinks and food, not much on tiki except the name.

That's about it, sadly.

yeah, the tiki decor in the dc metro area has retreated into peoples' houses. nothing commercial to be found.

the closest actual vintage tiki to richmond might be the fiji island in roanoke, but that is a couple hours trip.

There is so too Tiki in Washington DC !!

Also be sure to try the Navy Grog at the museum bar. It's better than Trader Vic's !!

When are we doing the Tiki and Tamales Crawl ??

Will do John!
Tamales are sadly eaten & destroyed on Saturday by friends that came by my place.
Let's put our heads together for a crawl, I am willing to make some type of deliciousness to start off our crawl :)

I will definitely check out Tiki-Tiki for sure :)
Thanks Skeeter!
The Fiji Island will be far since I will only 5 days in the area & 2 will be spent meeting parents & family. I will have to file that away for when I return.
Thank you Johnny Dollar!
