Aloha!
Last Thursday I went to a Ska festival featuring The Planet Smashers. Know this: Ska music isn't for everyone. One of my favorite somgs by them is "Super Orgy Porno Party" and their music is often played on the MTV cartoon "Undergrads".
Anyhow, they have a new album titled "Mighty" which has a Tiki as it's mascot, and features a song called Missionary's Downfall. I picked up a t-shirt with the Tiki on the front, and will scan in an image of it. Here are the lyrics to the song:

"Missionary's Downfall"

Everybody on your knees
"It's God" say the "Polynesse" [Sic]
They worship me mistakenly
I say "Tiki, who was he?"
Trader Vic at Hinky Dink's
He liked sex and he liked to drink
Built a temple to have fun
Huri Popo everyone

Aku-Aku, Mai-tai
Tonight's the night it'll be just fine
Gombay Smash or Kapu-Kai
Can't be bothered by the 9 to 5
Gotta get down at the coconut lounge tonight

Island people are a generous bunch
Offering drinks and buffet lunch
No missionary could ever see
Their downfall in Tahiti
Could this be paradise?
Hula skirts are really nice
Sweet and fruity drinks with ice
If I die this would suffice

Aku-Aku, Mai-tai
Tonight's the night it'll be just fine
Gombay Smash or Kapu-Kai
Can't be bothered by the 9 to 5
Come on I wuna lei ya at the coconut lounge tonight
Aku-Aku, Mai-tai
Tonight's the night it'll be just fine
Gotta get down at the coconut lounge tonight
Aku-Aku, Mai-tai
Tonight's the night it'll be just fine
Gombay Smash or Kapu-Kai
Can't be bothered by the 9 to 5
Gotta get down at the coconut lounge tonight

K

Cool lyrics. I'm gonna search for band info now.

Thx for the info!

Scotty

I keep reading the title of this thread dislexically as "Spotted Tiki" and having flashbacks to that whole Spotted Dick thing Woody and Chris had going a while back.

You know, I haven't see a lot of Spotted Tikis around...or Spotted Dicks for that matter. We're talking Polka Dots, right? :)

Thanks for the sound clip DawnTiki, I think I may attempt a legitimate download of that song, if I can find it.

They are a great band, were in a Ska festival here where I work, right outside my door...poor me had to listen to a free concert and dance my pants off at lunch time.

This song makes me think that one of the members MUST be into Polynesian Pop, I wonder if they know about Tiki Central?

The line "I say 'Tiki, who was he?'" sounds like a direct quote from the book..?
Must be a convert from the Jamaican side.

Piggybacking on the tiki/song idea, but I was remaniscing about this song recently:

Hoodoo Gurus - Stoneage Romeos ( 1983 )

Leilani

Dave Faulkner/J.Baker/K.Rendall/R. Radalj

Somewhere on a South Pacific island
Sits a young man staring at the surf
His native girlfriend died a death quite violent
A tribal sacrifice made to the earth

She was brown, her hair was black, her eyes were blue
A chief's daughter, Leilani was her name
She and her young man made a handsome two
But lava tore them both apart again
Please don't go to the volcano
He'd say please don't go to the volcano

They were saving for a little hut,
She collected sea-shells every day
Everynight they'd share a cigarette
But The ancient, angry gods got in the way
He'd say please don't go to the volcano
He'd would plead, please don't go, I'll miss you so
(CEREMONY:)
Katoomba Hey! Macumbah Ho! Umgawah!
Katoomba Hey! Macumbah Ho! Umgawah!
Katoomba Hey! Macumbah Ho! Umgawah!
Hey! Ho! Hey-eh!
Hey! Ho! Hey-eh! Ah...
Leilani - crula-bula-ulladulla-wok-a-tai
Aba-laba-laba Hut! Aba-laba-laba Hut!
Leilani-nevageta-huta-tera-cota-tile
Aba-laba-laba Hut! Aba-laba-laba Hut!
Umgawah!!!
Hey! Ho! Hey-eh!
Hey! Ho! Hey-eh!
Hey! Ho! Hey-eh!
Ah... Ah...

Still the young man sits there upon the beach,
He's staring misty-eyed out into space
He's thinking about his girlfriend (of late, deceased),
At least her death had purpose; his life is a waste!
And his life is a waste
Please don't go, I love you, I love you, I love you so..

Thanks for posting that song J$, it's so sad!

bigbrotiki, that band tends to do some Reggae as well, maybe they're bringing a bit of it into the song?
