Tiki Celebration with Music, Fashion Show & Vendors in the Courtyard starting at 5 PM followed by the 1951 island fantasy BIRD OF PARADISE starring Deborah Paget. With Richard Sherman, Composer of Disneyland's Enchanted Tiki Room theme in person!
BIRD OF PARADISE

It's time once again for our annual Tiki celebration! King Kukulele and his Friki Tikis will perform in the Egyptian Courtyard from 5:00 - 7:00 PM along with the Polynesian Paradise Dancers, plus a Tiki fashion show. Vendors include Tikis by Big Mike, Hawaiian Lei Body Products, Tiki Tony Carvings. Polynesian Paradise and Tiki Art by Eric October. You may also purchase BBQ and Polynesian-style cocktails from Maui & Sons Restaurant in the courtyard. At 7:30PM, join us in the theatre for a Tiki clip show featuring Richard Sherman, composer of the Enchanted Tiki Room theme at Disneyland (approx. 60 min., compiled by Denny Moynahan) followed by the feature presentation, 1951's BIRD OF PARADISE.

Starring Deborah Paget (Fritz Lang's THE TIGER OF ESCHNAPUR) in all her luscious beauty as Polynesian princess Kalua, opposite Louis Jourdan (GIGI) and Jeff Chandler. Director Delmer Daves (3:10 TO YUMA) creates a wildly entertaining piece of 1950s exotica laden with gorgeous locales (Hawaii doubles for the fictional South Seas island), volcanic danger and charming depictions of daily island life.

Just got the email about this, looks super fun! And finally... something not in the OC! (No offense guys... haha).

This should be a fun event! Bird of Paradise is a great movie... lotsa tikis! Plus some familiar tiki-type music!

This will be a good chance to check out the Maui & Sons restaurant, too, and see how tikified they are. (A moai lamp and lots of bamboo is visible through the front door... I've seen that while driving by)

And it's always a good time when Kukulele performs!

We're vending there - it's the only tiki event we do anymore. Tiki and classic movies - yes, please! We've been to a couple Tiki Nights in the past and it is always a good time. Looking forward to seeing you and Manuel, Eric! :)

Okay not to be too much of a Buzz Kill but everyone should be aware this is the weekend with the 405 being closed between the 10 and the 101 Fwys and traffic is predicted to be awful. :o

So leave early and use surface streets.

Looking forward to this outstanding event! (Planning to brave the carmageddon & make a pilgrimage from Fresno.)

Seriously glad I live in OC
and plan to stay down here during that weekend to avoid the traffic nightmare.

But these Tiki Movie things are cool,
and I am bummed to miss it this year.

Yay! I will have a handful of new tiki mugs, hanging toucans, and carved signs! Looking forward to my first tiki event of the summer.

But the Red Line subway and other options will be FREE that weekend. Coming from the north, park in North Hollywood. Coming from the south you won't be getting near the affected part of the 405 anyway. Sounds like a fun event. I've been to several and will be there again this year!

Man, they always manage to put these on when I am still just out of town! The 1951 "Bird of Paradise" is THE ultimate South Seas Movie Kitsch fest! It was a musical before, and filmed in 1932 by King Vidor with Dolores Del Rio, but this one stars Debra Paget in her most radiant beauty...

Recommended. There is a cool surfing scene and an abundance of Tikis which art director Lyle Wheeler used again a couple of years later in White Witch Doctor and again in the TV series Adventures In Paradise. See if you can tell if some of the movie was shot on Oahu or the Big Island.....or both.
