Tiki Central / Collecting Tiki

Questions (and some bragging), about my latest E-bay find.

Pages: 1 20 replies

I know I'm shooting myself in the foot here, giving away some of my secrets, but it's fun to find those hidden tiki items on e-bay.

Here's the scorpion bowl I just picked up. It looks like one other tiki collector spotted it as well, (sorry, mate!).

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2669558758

I received the bowl in the mail just the other day, and it's very nice:

Unfortunately, it has no markings whatsoever. It seems to match the scorpion bowl on my menu from the Los Angeles ISLANDER on La Cienega Blvd:

But I can't be sure. I was wondering if anyone knows anything more about this make of scorpion bowl. Are there marked versions? Along with that, does anyone own mugs or bowls from the Islander in Los Angeles that are marked as such?

Puamana, does this scorpion bowl appear on any other menus in your collection, perhaps?

Any help pinning down the provenance of this bowl would be greatly appreciated.

It doesn't look like the Islander pic much at all...

I have seen this bowl on Ebay before, but do not know where it came from.

Wow, I'm really helpful, eh?

I have one of those too.... no marks....

Got one too, also no marks. But at least we know that they made their way all the way to Austin (where a friend of mine got it free for me - lady told him, "just take it" when he asked the cost!)

I had one, too, slathered in green paint, but it broke before I could get around to stripping it.

Also...appears to be made by Frankoma, although not signed.

I bought one on fourth street in Reno. It undoubtably came from Trader Dicks.

Tim, I have one marked from the Islander in Stockton. They are made by OMC- not Frankoma. I'm assuming that one from the LA Islander would be marked as such, but have never seen one. I'm sure that art in the menu is of that bowl...hopefully someone will find a marked LA Islander one someday!

I did own one marked from Trader Dick's, so Al's was probably used there, like he said...

Thanks all!

I knew you collectors would come through with some answers.

Tikifish, You're right. I didn't look close enough. The figures on that bowl in the menu are kneeling and have different headdresses. Would like to see an actual scorpion bowl from the Islander, though.

Mike, thanks for identifying as OMC. I guess they were used by a number of restaurants, not always marked. I can't wait to use it myself for a scorpion soon.

Sabu

Sabu,

Madame Bong picked up one while on business in Seattle for $15. No markings on ours either. Is it rare?

Nice find!

I just used your idea of searching under names other than mug and got a couple of 50's pin up mugs for spit. :D

Hey I've found some of those mugs before.. no markings though. http://www.unklejohn.com/mytikis02.jpg

I collect Tiki and Frankoma and I know that isn't Frankoma.

For a list of all the Tiki that Frankoma made, check out this site:

That "dusty" opaque glaze got me....

Sabu,

Here's a Hawaii Kai menu with the Scorpion Bowl :

Also, a Bali Hai in Northport, Long Island menu had one, but I think it may have been the similar looking version with kneeling figures :

I found a picture in Tiki Quest on page 79. The text reads "Two examples of the brown speckled Tiki bowl. This bowl was used in a variety of locals, including Stockton's Islander and Reno's Trader Dick's." It doesn't seem to have anymore information that you already don't know.

Hello Everyone,

I just picked up a bowl identical to the one in Sabu's post.

It is marked "Islander Stockton Calif."

Just thought I would share.
