need help with chord progression...

I know a little about theory, but not very much. The song has a quick little downward chromatic chord progression, but I'm having trouble figuring out what one of the chords would be. I don't know what the key is, but I do know that it sounds Major. Can you help me figure out what the missing, third chord is? C, E7, __, F Thanks!

But the mention of a possible chromatic descending line cliche makes it not as likely. Of course he could have the fourth chord (F)wrong. Again, more info is needed. Fred!!! Come back!!!!
