Caribbean Vacation Tips

Aloha TC,

It's been a while. Work has been kicking our asses lately but during the holiday break T and I will be cruising the Southern Caribbean!

Our ports of call will be as follows:

San Juan
St. Thomas
St. Kitts
Grenada
Isla Margarita
Aruba

I've never been to any of these places so any insider tips from TC members on what to see and do would be greatly appreciated.

Mahalo and Mele Kalikimaka!

I've never done a cruise.
But I've been to most of those places.
Bring a suitcase just for Rum.

If you get a chance to bolt from St. Thomas for a day or whatever - I'd head straight for St. Johns. It's about an hour on the ferry each way.

Aruba is fairly docile - you can find some cool stuff to do there. But I haven't been there for a few years... soooo.

Oh yeah - if you don't dive - snorkel. Often. The water should be crystal clear about now.

St. Thomas is a rat hole. It needs to be burned to the ground and started anew.
Don't buy any jewelry there no matter who is selling it to you. Which is every organism there.

The best treasures to find are antique anythings. Latch on to it when you can find it reasonable and that's off the main drags.

Your last 4 ports are going to be your favorites if you're anything like everyone else on this board. Save all of your money for those places and for rum.

If you like night life - you're gonna love this trip. Especially the first 2 ports and Aruba.

Hope you have a blast.
Eat as much conch and fish as you can hold.
Did I mention the rum?

Besides the rum (did pablus mention that?), you may want to pick up some Bay Rum cologne in St. Johns. They've been making it for a long time there and it comes in a neat bottle hand wrapped with thatch. I've never been there but I buy my Bay Rum from them directly on their web site. It's probably a bit cheaper to buy it in St. Johns.

San Juan - wander into the Old City if you have time, see the Morro. I personally liked Charlotte Amalie, but then I was gonked on Coladas. There's this place at the top of the cable car that makes a huge variety of them. Yummy!

enjoy,
em.

Ahhh...the rum. This is going to be fun!

Watch out for the casinos in Aruba. They will suck up all of your rum money. Aruba is not as good for diving as Bonaire but like stated before, the snorkeling is great. Also is a great wind surfing spot.

Enjoy

see if you can get a good bottle of curacao while on aruba. curacao was concocted on the island of curcao which is in the netherland antilles (as is aruba).

Speaking of Curacao, you might want to make the short hop over there. GREAT topless beach!! Cool to buy Curacao in Curacao and they have the only brewery in the world that makes beer from distilled sea water. The Amstel brewery is a fun tour. The water is bath temp. and the women are gorgeous!
