Staining Lauhala Matting

Has anyone ever tried to stain Lauhala Matting?

If so what did you use and how did you do it?

I have a project I'd like to use the matting on, but it is
too light in color.

I simply painted on one or two coats of quick drying interior varnish, teak colour, satin finish. And the way it didn't take exactly evenly all over gave the matting a weathered look rather than a stained look.
