ebay: Tiki Speakers - Anyone Know Anything About These

Not my auction but looking for to see if anyone know about this. (I don't believe tiki should be in the title).

My speakers of 20 years are completely blown and I just happened upon these on ebay. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about them. I sent an email to the seller and he advised that they are compatable with current equipment but could not provide any additional information.

I love the look of them and think they would go great in the living area as I finally got the Shag prints up and am trying to retro the room.

But out my price range for the moment.
I found a pair of wall-mount speakers with a volume knob that I plan on "tikifying" after I got them rewired. Cost: $2

Nice. I saw a similar pair of speakers at an estate sale a while back that were made to look kind of like pagodas. They were like little shoji boxes with roofs. Still kickin' myself for passing on them...

Tiki? Well, I have seen them many times over the years in antique stores. Always fetching high dollar.

The first ones look cooler, though.

tikimug, cool link, now that might be a nice alternative. I still will end up spending about the same by having to purchase new woofers. it sure gives me some ideas though.

Those are quite gruvy looking, Tiki410.

If you get them they can be pretty cheply brought up to a decent standard.

New woofer and tweeter and probably crossover would really be necessary to make them start to sound decent.

Speaker Cuty has lots of drivers and crossover kits and match all three so all you have to do is screw and glue.

There are others, but I am familiar enough with those two to say they are worth looking over.

On the true do-it-yourself side, there are a couple cool things to do that are quite cheap and will help the actual box sound better:

1. Wood Glue and fine lead shot or clean sand mixed together and then painted on or "poured and rotated" into the inside of the cabinet can very effectively damp resonances associated with cabinet vibration.

2. Layers of felt cut and glued to the front baffle and along the edges of the cabinet where the speakers connect to the front can cut down on the amount of refraction caused by a big flat front baffle.

I bet for not much money, you could get some sweet sounds from those babies! Be sure to give progress reports no matter what approach you take!

Looks like now it will be a pass (I needed one more day to find out if the Christmas Bonus is coming through) but the information you provided along with the link to create something out of my own speakers has led me along the lines of refurbishing my old Boston Acoustics (minus the lamp).

Your advise is great information and will be put to use.

Well, I did not get the speakers as the wifey decided that she needed a digital camera (can't help who you fall in love with).

Anyway, with my old ones blown I had to come up with an option. So I found these in an attic with a system that did not work.

As I could not stand the look of them I created this to slide them in. No real loss of sound as the speakers aren't that much in the first place.
