Yard sale tiki, any thoughts on origin?

The wife brought this one home for $5. A very common style, but this one is hardwood, and the level of carving seems to be much higher than the norm. Any guesses as to age, origin?

T

NICE score @ $5.00! To me it looks 60's/70's, w/cut above carving!

Yeah, she's a good 'un. The wife, that is. I'm surprised to see no markings of any kind, because this wasn't cheap, no matter when it was done. I can't decide if the grooves on the back are from some kind of rotary tool like a die grinder, or if they are saw marks where the lumber was rough cut.

Looking further at the back looks like an outline for a project is being shown. Interesting? Thortiki
PS Would look GREAT either hanging or freestanding!

Those are chainsaw marks. It's a common Tongan styled Hawaiian tourist souvenir carving.

They come from places like this:

Tongan Carver at the Craft Fair down on Front Street in Kehei.

Buzzy Out!

Thanks Buzzy! I was leaning toward the Tongan/Hawaiian angle. They tend to have good detail like this. Glad to see it turn up in flyover country.
