Tiki Central / Tiki Drinks and Food

My wife and I are going to mix our first tiki cocktail tonight. What do you recommend?

My wife and I enjoy mixing drinks together, but mostly the 'classic' cocktails. Tonight we've rented South Pacific and we plan to make--for the first time ever--a tiki drink.

What do you recommend? If possible, please include a recipe. Thanks!

The original Trader Vic's Mai Tai
care of Beachbum Berry.

Recipe: In your shaker pour 1 ounce each fresh lime juice, Rhum Clément VSOP Martinique rum, and Appleton Estate Extra dark Jamaican rum;
1/2 ounce orange Curacao
1/4 ounce each orgeat syrup and sugar syrup.
Add at least 2 cups of crushed ice, then shake well for around 10 seconds.
Pour unstrained into a double old-fashioned glass.
Sink your spent lime shell in the drink, and garnish with a mint sprig.

I'd suggest keeping things simple. A derby daiquiri is a good transition from classic style cocktails to tiki.

That website also has tons of recipes for other tiki classics like the Mai Tai and Zombie.

Be sure and let us all know how it turned out.

man, i'd go full scorpion bowl- that's tiki!

Because nothing says "welcome to tiki" like alcohol poisoning.

Yeah! Scorpion Bowl! Drop by 7-11 for some long slurpee straws and fill up any exotic bowl/vase/fishtank you got.

Don't forget the tunes, Martin Denny and Les Baxter on Pandora or search the Tiki Music thread for free downloads.

update?

I'd go with the Mai Tai.

I agree that the TV Mai Tai is a perfect drink for beginners.

Mai Tai for sue.

Consider TV's Mai Tai as "Tiki Drinks 101".
