(In addition to the bar, there are several bistro tables behind me that can't be seen in this photo)

Sadly, the Washington, DC region gave up all of it's Tiki glory years ago.
Trader Vic's closed down almost 20 years ago, and the last true area Tiki bar, The Honolulu, closed 10 years ago next month. We are, however, fortunate that House of Foong Lin still keeps a torch burning with the area's widest selection of Tiki Drinks and even some classic Polynesian dishes to enjoy. (They still serve a Pu-Pu Platter with a wooden server and flaming hibachi in the center)

Tiki footnote: The Chef/Owner's brother and former partner was a bartender at the DC Trader Vic's in the 1970s. Several of their drinks are recipes carefully crafted from his brother's days behind the bar at Trader Vic's.

Aloha wear welcomed and encouraged!

EASY PARKING: There is a 200 space municipal parking lot directly across the street.

**If you are visiting or passing through DC on a Thursday night, PM me and I'll be glad to get you directions!

Side Note: DC does have a vibrant Craft Cocktail movement. There are places that are doing amazing versions of a few Tiki classics that are very much worth a visit. (And in some cases, an equity line of credit to pay for the bar bill ) House of Foong Lin's charm is that they are an old school Chinese/Asian restaurant that kept the classic Tiki drinks going long after they all but disappeared from most menus. They have also been amazingly receptive to the local Ohana that have discovered this non-trendy oasis. They have brought in special rums to cater to their Tiki regulars, upped their game with several drink additions to the menu (a very respectable Black Magic, a Mai Tai '44 and Mai Tai 52, among them). Also, the food is absolutely first rate - some of the very best Chinese food in the Washington, DC area.

Tiki Thirstday continues on March 27th. Special thanks to the 37 Ohana who gathered together to start things off. Our first meet up was such a great time we're working on how to keep things fun and up a notch. This week we hope to:

Add more Tiki/Surf/Exotica. Not sure if we're going to be CD or iPod/iPhone ready, but feel free to bring some favorite music just in case.

Aloha / Tiki / Island wear or flair is strongly encouraged. Starting this week we'll be having a special Tiki Thirstday drawing open to those who are wearing some kind of Aloha spirit.

A reminder that this is a very relaxed open meet-up. If you have friends that you think will enjoy the spirit of the evening, bring them along. Even if they have no idea what Tiki is, this is a great intro. The more the merrier is how we Tiki here.

Coming Soon:
Some of our "regulars" not only love a good Tiki drink, but enjoy and collect fine rums. (There is one among us that has a personal collection of more than 100 different rums!) If there are enough people who enjoy fine sipping rums, we'll try to bring in some Rum Ambassadors over the next few weeks. Rum Ambassadors are special reps from the various distilleries (or sometime from distributors) that have and share special knowledge about rum.

Tiki themed movies or special screenings. Some folks have floated the idea having a "South Pacific" evening, or a "Blue Hawaii" night. We'll either show them in the lounge on the big screen, or we may bring a projector into the dining room.
