Spirit of Tiki in London 14/15 August

Pages: 1 5 replies

There is a new event in London on 14/15th August called Spirit of Tiki, I think its something to do with Mahiki, Its £15 entry fee and that includes a ceramic Tiki mug and free cocktail so not bad value. we have booked a train up for the Sunday afternoon, Not sure what it will be like but its worth a go
Here is the address:-
Beach 338 , 338 Boord Street, Greenwich , London, SE10 0PF

Uh oh!:

"Drink Up LDN canceled Spirit of Tiki.

Studio 338, the venue secured to stage the inaugural Spirit of Tiki has today suffered a very serious fire.
We are awaiting official fire brigade reports but are grateful to say that no one has been hurt in the incident.

Due to the severity of the blaze, the management team at the venue has unfortunately taken the sad decision to cancel the event and subsequent others, while the venue undergoes a full refurbishment.

As you can imagine – we’re beyond disappointed but are committed to hosting the event and have immediately begun looking for a new venue, however this certainly won’t happen in time for this weekend.

For those that have already bought a ticket - Design My Night as our ticket provider will be refunding your ticket purchase and the money will be in your account in the next 3–5 working days.

Please keep your eyes peeled for the new event listing – which we’ll share as soon as we’re able.
Thank you so much for your understanding at this difficult time."

It seems they had good intentions...

"...Tiki was born in the 30's and was in its boom in the 50's and 60's.
In the 70's and 80's Tiki was so popular ,that everyone was doing It. People that now about it and people that didn't have a clue. This is how the quality and identity of Tiki got lost. Tiki slowly got mistaken for colourful Disco tacky.
Now Tiki is in its boom again! As one of the modern Tiki pioneers I want to help to keep the quality, identity and the "Spirit of Tiki" alive!
With the Spirit of Tiki we want to educate people about Tiki ,revive few of the classic Tiki Cocktails and create some Modern Tiki drinks.
Most of all we want to create the ultimate Aloha Spirit Luau Party!"

...but what the hey were they talking about with that "70s and 80s...everyone was doing it"-thing? It seems they got the "Tiki Devolution" history a bit wrong? :)

So sad, and hopefully nobody was hurt. Good thing they're bounding back with rebuilding/remodeling plans.

I think they intended to say that "in the 70's/80's nobody was doing it," except for a few of us who were slowly discovering Polynesian/tropical/jungle stuff and unknowingly at the time heading towards being participants in the upcoming tiki revival.

Shame as we were looking forward to this, Not much Tiki stuff happens over here and when it does you try to support it, It did look like a event for people who just wanted a drink but hopefully the real people into Tiki would make it good. Annoyingly we booked train tickets to get there which we discovered are non refundable

That is annoying. But are there other things to do there which would still make a trip worthwhile? I'm always looking for new things and new places to travel. Maybe you can find a brewery or distillery which you would otherwise not have visited, maybe with other tikiphiles from your area? And perhaps you can "bank" the non-refundable fare for a trip in the future when the event is re-scheduled? You may soon find yourself on a mission from the tiki gods!

You could go and check out THIS place ?:

Sounds like they know what they are doing cocktail-wise, and if Cheeky Tiki was involved, it must be good :)

...Argh! Just checked their site, and it looks like they are not open Sundays :(
