Hukilau 2018

The Hukilau site is live. More details to come.

I’ll be doing a presentation and hosting a Mai-Kai hospitality room.

Joe and Donella Vitale are the featured artists. They, along with King Kukulele and I are the only people who have attended every Hukilau.

Supporting Hukilau is supporting the Mai-Kai. This event exists because of the Mai-Kai and it exists to promote it by getting media exposure and adding new fans.

I have been working with Richard who owns the event now for a few years and he is a great guy. He was going to the Mai-Kai long before Hukilau existed. He shares my desire to keep supporting and promoting the Mai-Kai

The Hukilau 2018 symposiums to include Disney imagineer, Tiki on TV

Polynesian Pop has always been deeply ingrained in American culture, from Tiki’s mid-century heyday through today. This symbiotic relationship will be explored in colorful detail during special symposiums at The Hukilau, the 17th annual Tiki weekender happening June 6-10 in Fort Lauderdale.

Among the special presentations that are going on sale today at TheHukilau.com are “Travel with Trader Sam” hosted by Disney imagineer Kyle Barnes and “The Golden Age of Tiki and the South Pacific on Television” with film and video collector Ron Ferrell.

Guests who buy multi-day passes will get first shot at these and other educational activities, including Okole Maluna Cocktail Academy classes and rum tastings, craft classes with noted artists, plus many other hands-on activities. Also going on sale are tickets to the three aquatic performances by Marina the Fire Eating Mermaid and her pod of aquaticats at The Wreck Bar at the nearby B Ocean Resort.

Bob Van Dorpe: Purveyor and Preservationist of Polynesia - A nearly unknown force behind the opening of the Mai-Kai, he was Donn Beach's best friend, and a Don the Beachcomber Chicago veteran. Bob Van Dorpe, with his good friend and partner Herb Kane, shaped Hawaii and Hawaiian culture profoundly. We'll explore his career through interviews and unpublished, never before seen images of the Mai-Kai and various Polynesian themed projects around the Pacific rim.

Surf Guitar Lesson & Workshop with Eddie Angel of Los Straitjackets. Villagers will help pick a song the class will learn, then one student from the class will be selected to play the song with Eddie live at The Mai-Kai on Saturday night. This not a class for beginners. You need to be an intermediate level or higher guitarist to participate. You will need to bring your own guitar or source one locally, but amp is not needed.

Yes it was a great event, Tim's tour of the Mai Kai on Sunday was also a highlight, We will be returning next week for our last night just before we fly home

Thank you! I felt bad that day and felt like that was my worst presentation. I just felt a bit flat. Strength of the material I guess.

Just got home from Hukilau-What an awesome event.! Met a lot of great Tiki Peeps as well as seeing lottsa friends from Cali. Seminars were super. Mahalo to all for their efforts in putting this event together.
Btw, I got caught up by TSA For trying to board my flight with the hardware portion of a vintage ice crusher in my carry on. I had the plastic ice storage section in my luggage. Got em reversed. Had a lot of splaining to do to about ten agents. They had no idea what I had.
