Stray Pirate, Las Vegas, NV (bar)

I was in Vegas last weekend and had a few hours to check out the stray Pirate, which just celebrated its first anniversary. Its tiki-adjacent as its a pirate-themed bar. The story is that the crew of a pirate ship was cursed by a sea witch who sunk their ship to the bottom of the sea and turned them all into dogs.

The immersion is great. The bar is one room which serves as the cargo area of the ship. The back of the bar is all LED screens showing views out the side of the sunken ship. Portholes on the other side of the room show other scenes and the ceiling shows the sea above the grates covering the cargo area. The music was appropriate for the environment as well, a mix of some exotica, sea shantys, and other relevant tunes.

The drinks were pretty good. I went with two off their "Spare the Sugarcane, Low-Sugar and Tart Cocktails" section, the Salty Sea Dog and the Siren's Seduction. The latter was my favorite of the two but they were both good. I bought one of their skull mugs for my collection and headed out. It was a Sunday afternoon and the place had enough people to feel occupied but it wasn't busy. I've heard that Friday and Saturday nights can be quite packed which is why I waited until Sunday.

Stray Pirate is one of my home tiki bars. The build was done by Bamboo Ben and Son. It is consistently great. All juices are fresh squeezed and the owner makes his own ginger beer. I wish they had food, but it is my go to place when I am in the middle of Vegas. Everything is good.

As I was sitting at the bar finishing up my second drink a older guy asked if the stool next to me was open. When he sat down we made some small talk and he mentioned that he was looking for a new "home" bar as his regular had closed for good the night before. He said that Stray Pirate had the advantage that he could get there by bike or taking the bus and didn't have to drive.

My next trip to Vegas is probably when we have our user conference there again in two years but I'll be back at the Stray Pirate when it happens.

This place looks really cool. From the name, I was prepared to be underwhelmed, but whoever put this bar together really put some thought into it.
