WTF?

For those of you not sure of what she's talking about:

  1. Click here.
  2. Review member numbers 1733 to 1743

Yeah, another person thought they could use this forum for their spamming. Luckily, their homepage link(s) are hidden so that a moderator can review the link for verification. I'm sure they will be eliminated very soon.

It's possible that this thread may not make sense in the near future since the members will (hopefully) be eliminated completely.

May I (again) direct you to my previous thoughts on controlling spam? (Remember: Verifiable Email Address). Thank you to those that actually supported my thoughts by their posts and by their private emails directly to me.

As always, just my 2 coconuts worth.

I just got a couple of those new 'members' registering on the Lotta Living board. Luckily they don't post anything - They just list their porn websites in their profiles. So it's pretty benign and easy to delete them as soon as it's brought to a moderator's attention.

They do seem to post legitimate email addresses to the same websites. I think they would get confirmed. My guess is this is partially automated.

I have deleted them. I'm looking into fixing it so it doesn't happen as often.

By the way, this is a new form of spam called google-spamming, where profiles are created on forum websites in order to get the URLs included on webpages. This in-turn increases their visisibly in google :(

This is why user websites are hidden until they can be verified now.

PS SCD: Verifiable email addresses IS on the top of my list of things to do. But unfortunately I didn't write this forum so changing it can be somewhat tricky at times.

Sorry if my initial post seemed vague. That was my lame, sober, late night attempt at humor. Thanks for the links SCD :) Just as I thought, some wacky, new and improved form of spam. :)

-edit-

Wow! Hit again! As of 1:22pm, there are 22 new (stupid) members at it again. I wonder if their IP address can just be blocked totally to prevent this again.

She-male cocktail, eh? I couldn't find it in any of Trader Vic's or Jeff Berry's books. Anyone know the recipe for that one?

Ok, well obviously that would be:

1 part ...

Ahhh, we'd better not go there...

"absolute-shemale"?

Brings to mind a long running ad campaign..

I, for one, welcome our new Brazilian she-males! Aloha, hapa haole hermaphrodites!

I did some research and I have confirmed that it is automated:

http://ludumdare.com/forums/bb_memberlist.php?&start=800&sortby=

http://knighthoodofbuh.org/board/phpBB/bb_memberlist.php?&start=200&sortby=

http://debat.folkekirken.dk/bb_memberlist.php?&start=500&sortby=

http://www.cartooncommunity.com/phpBB/bb_memberlist.php?&start=100&sortby=

And it just keeps going and going. Notice that they are ALL the same BBS software (the same software we use). Of course, I've modified ours so that is does not display the URLs until the website has been confirmed. but until I can figure out a better way to stop them, it's going to be a cat-and-mouse type game.

Hanford, have you still been getting these "new" members? LL gets at least 1 new member like this a week...

my bb software lets me ban email addresses and ip addresses, though. but i am not sure how to figure out what their ip address is?
