Topic following function?

Is there a way to add a bookmarking/following button to the interface? There are a lot of topics across the forum that I would like to follow, but don't necessarily want to make a post just to initiate the automatic topic update notifications.

Forgive me if this has been asked before.

Not for an individual topic. You can follow a whole forum in your profile settings… but that might get too noisy.

I wouldn't worry too much about just posting "following" in a comment.
