I'm doing some "art" type stuff and wanted to use the Hawaiian word for "alcoholic". I looked it up and got 'ona lama, 'ona mau. What is the difference between the two? The image is of a shrunken head with a fez and crossbones, zombie "mug", floating olive, circling flies. It's just a small little object I'm painting on, but I wanted to add the lettering. Or...if ya'll have another word that might be better suited? |

Looking in my book this is what I found: Ona - adj. drunk, intoxicated Mau - n. a word designating more than one Lama - n. a forest tree, a torch, a lamp |

Hey thanks! That helps alot. I was just using an internet site...guess I'll haveta get a little Hawaiian dictionary to go with my Japanese dictionary! I think I'll go with "ona mau". Thanks again...now I can finish this piece before bed. :) http://photo.starblvd.net/BarnettSigns [ Edited by: BARNETT on 2004-05-09 00:35 ] |

I'm using "The Hawaiian Language" by Henry P. Judd 1945 Glad I could help you out. I've got more than a few different language dictionaries/CDs/tapes/books/records taking up space in my studio. |
