Grog Log's Blackbeards Ghost vs Pirates Grog

Pages: 1 1 replies

I just received another old cocktail book printed in 1979. One of the recipes contained within is the "Pirates Grog" from Blackbeards Galley & Grog in Newport Beach, CA. I recalled seeing a similar recipe in the Grog Log, "My favorite cocktail book", and sure enough there was a recipe for "Blackbeards Ghost". Beachbum Berry states that his recipe his own version of Blackbeards "Pirates Grog". Below is the original recipe word for word. Check it against page 21 in the Grog log.

It makes me wonder how many of other recipes that I have loved, are just a bit off from the original. I think that the float and garnish prescribed below is an excellent touch.

Pirate Grog
1 1/2 ozs. light rum
1/2 oz. apricot flavored brandy
1/2 oz falernum
2 ozs. prepared sweet-and-sour mix
1 oz. orange juice
2 dashes angostura bitters
1/2 oz. dark rum
1 green cocktail cherry
1 maraschino cherry
1 pineapple chunk

Pour all ingredients, except dark rum, cherries, and pineapple, over ice in a cocktail shaker. Shake well. Pour into tall 12-oz. glass. Float dark rum on drink. Garnish with cherries and pineapple chunk.

Enjoy!
