Finding wood

We would like to attempt to carve a tiki for a fundraiser. Where is the best place (San Diego) to find the wood?

and the innuendoes ensue... :wink:

Just saw a pile of logs right off the I-15 at Camino Del Norte go east and they were on the left of the road. not sure what type of wood? Was there yesterday.

Might want to ask some of the Garderns in your local area. These guys spend all week pruning yards and on weekends they do the big jobs they usually have loads of trunks (expecialy palm in So. Cal ).. they usualy have to pay to get rid of them at the county dump sites so they are happy to unload them in your drive way..

Tongakings right, at least here in England most tree surgeons/arborists are more than happy for you to take their wood as they have to pay for people to take it and turn it into firewood. Even though they cut trees down they kinda like and respect them and would far rather it go to a good cause than up in smoke.

Try looking in the phone book for log home companies. They usually have several different types of wood logs

so, once you get your palm trunks, can you start carving away?

or do you have to dry/cure the wood?

depends on the wood, but with palm you can usually start choppin immediately.
