On March 16, 1521, Ferdinand Magellan landed on the island of Homonhon in the Philippines. The fact that they had been "discovered" was a surprise to the Aetas, Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Southeast Asians & Arabs who were already in residence there. Magellan was able to communicate with the native peoples because his Malay interpreter could understand their language. He was received in a friendly manner by the chief of the island of CebĂș, who, after eight days, was baptized along with several hundred other natives. Magellan was killed by the forces of chief Lapu-Lapu (the Philippine horo, not the Grouper fish) while attempting to subdue the island of Mactan. Other Historical Highlights:

Hey FF, have you ever noticed how many explorers have died in grizzly manners? Merriweather Lewis and his three attempts at Suicide. Cook was disemboweld and parted out(but not eaten according to that new Horwitz book) Mungo Park was said to have been eaten Scott just froze to death after eating his Marmalade...(his Brand was Coopers Oxford cut bye the way) I'm sure there are tons more... |

LaSalle was murdered my mutinous expedition members & left for the animals to eat. Alvarado was crushed when his horse fell on him while retreating from attacking Indians. Pizarro was assassinated by another faction within the Conquistadores. Ponce de Leon died of the effects of a poisoned arrow. De Soto died of a fever & his body had to be hidden from the natives since he'd convinced them that Christians were physically immortal. Coronado died peacefully, but when he had set out for the lost city of Cibola (the North American El Dorado) with over 1600 men, he returned in failure with only 100. Balboa was executed for (suspected) treason. Cordoba was shot full of arrows by vengefull indians for killing their chief. Bering died of scurvy while investigating the Straits named for him. Rev.
